Fished in!

Scottish crime writer Ian Rankin admits he was only joking about J.K. Rowling working on a crime novel.

“This is a joke that got out of hand,” said Rankin, describing how the remark was made on stage during the course of a [Edinburgh] festival event.

“There were 600 people in the audience, and only one person didn’t laugh,” he added.

The AP and other wire services picked up the story, and it was all over the news last weekend. Good one, Ian, but you should have gone for romance novel!

King talks Potter

Again. This time Stephen King writes for Entertainment Weekly about the impact of Harry Potter, why most reviewers missed the point, and, perhaps most interestingly, the talent of J.K. Rowling.

Maybe it’s the British prose. It’s hard to resist the hypnotism of those calm and sensible voices, especially when they turn to make-believe. Rowling was always part of that straightforward storytelling tradition (Peter Pan, originally a play by the Scot J.M. Barrie, is another case in point). She never loses sight of her main theme

Y’know, I’m starting to suspect that Dunc has a secret yearning to be crafty, in the Hobby Lobby kinda sense, at least. She keeps coming across this nifty stuff that really has to be shared.
