George Lucas on The Colbert Report!

George showed up – SURPRISE – as one of the two finalists in Colbert’s Greenscreen Challenge. (See an entry montage) Colbert introduced the first clip, with the creator, Bonnie (not that Bonnie) on the phone, and then announced that the creator of the second clip, one ‘George L.’ was with them in the studio.

The clip was footage from the the opening ROTS battle, with Stephen, battle droids, and a very special guest. You can watch it on Comedy Central’s site or starwars.com.

Alas – George lost, puppydog eyes and all. He hung out for the rest of the show, both of them holding in the laughs only slightly better than Horatio Sanz on SNL, and ended with a heroic lightsaber duel. Who won? George. I believe that’s the first time Colbert let a guest win anything.

I’ll keep an eye on Youtube for more clips, but right now there’s not much there. Pirates, where are you when I need you? Slacking. How typical.

George speaks

IESB interview with George Lucas, where he clarifys some remarks from last week. Um, he did say quiting blockbusters, not movies entirely, right? Because that’s pretty much exactly what I heard. Oh well.

I was going to link this in the video post, but then I decided to go with the whole cute thing. George is many things, but I wouldn’t really call him cute.

It’s nice to be rich

The Lucas Foundation has give a record-breaking $175 million to George’s alma mater, the University of Southern California. $75 million goes to build a state-of-the-art facility for their cinema school. Lucas says:

“I discovered my passion for film and making movies when I was a student at USC in the 1960s, and my experiences there shaped the rest of my career. I’m also an ardent advocate for education at all levels and encouraging young people to pursue their ambitions by learning. I’m very fortunate to be in a position to combine my two passions and to be able to help USC continue molding the futures of the moviemakers of tomorrow.”

Doesn’t that make you feel at least a little better about buying the Star Wars DVDs for a second time?

Here we go again…

George Lucas talks to Empire Magazine about Indy 4. Key quote:

“We’re basically going to do The Phantom Menace”, says Lucas (stay with him here, he’s making a point). “People’s expectations are way higher than you can deliver. You could just get killed for the whole thing…We would do it for fun and just take the hit with the critics and the fans…But nobody wants to get into it unless they are really happy with it”.

Well, yes. But don’t encourage them, George. Bringing up TPM in this context – no matter how good a point you attach to it – is just going to make the fanboys start pre-frothing.

Although, a LFL crossover I’d like to see? A golden Jar-Jar.

News of the Day

Okay, I lied. Here are a few interesting Star Wars items on the net today:

The Lucas Effect, a great piece from Popular Mechanics on George Lucas and his effects on moviemaking.

Lucasfilm Consolidates IT for Animation, Movies, Video Games, an article from TechWeb about Lucasfilm’s IT.

And finally, from the starwars.com boards, a survey for Star Wars fans from John Tenuto, a sociology instructor at College of Lake County. I took the survey, but I must admit I found the questions asked rather limiting. I’d like to see him asking more asked about fan attitudes and perceptions of the different aspects of the fandom…
