Jimmy Kimmel Live was almost all Star Wars last night. As expected, it was low on revelations, but Rian Johnson did reveal the first word of the film, and we spotted a couple of familiar faces in the audience…
A new featurette arrived today, a look at training for The Last Jedi featuring Daisy Ridley, Gwendoline Christie, John Boyega, Kelly Marie Tran and Adam Driver.
We got a pair of new commercials overnight. The first, which debuted during a Disney Christmas special, features some new Poe Dameron, BB-8 and Rey footage. The other commercial has a porg!
It was Mark Hamill’s turn on Good Morning America today, where he says his most important line in The Last Jedi is “This is not going to go the way you think.” Plus, a cameo from Sebastian Stan!
Coming up Friday night, Hamill, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Andy Serkis, Oscar Isaac, Laura Dern, Adam Driver, Gwen Christie, Kelly Marie Tran, Domhnall Gleeson and director Rian Johnson – will all be on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live.
The big feature today was Rolling Stone’s cover story, which talks to a good chunk of the cast and reveals some shocking facts – like Adam Driver not knowing what emo is, which is a shame. It also gives us this priceless quote from Daisy Ridley:
“It’s somewhat a reflection of society,” acknowledges the saga’s new star, Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey, and who has gone from unknown London actress to full-blown movie star nearly as fast as her character went from desert scavenger to budding Jedi. “But also it is escapism, because there are creatures and there are people running around with fucking lasers and shit. So, I think, a wonderful mix of both.”
Fucking lasers and shit. Star Wars! For a less sweary take on the subject, Rian Johnson:
“That’s one thing I hope people will be surprised about with the movie,” Johnson says. “I think it’s very funny. The trailers have been kind of dark – the movie has that, but I also made a real conscious effort for it to be a riot. I want it to have all the things tonally that I associate with Star Wars, which is not just the Wagner of it. It’s also the Flash Gordon.”
There’s plenty more – consider this one a must-read.
It was John Boyega’s turn on the publicity rounds today, as he stopped by Good Morning America and Live with Kelly and Ryan. And Kelly Marie Tran is on The Star Wars Show. I believe this is the first we’ve heard that she’s narrating the Cobalt Squad audiobook?
Daisy Ridley was on The Tonight Show last night, where she talked about Barbra Streisand, Carrie Fisher, bartending the wrap party, and took the whisper challenge.
Entertainment Weekly is back with their latests news dump for The Last Jedi. The cover reveal story sheds some light on Laura Dern’s Amilyn Holdo and her role in the Resistance; The obligatory gallery features several new quotes and photos.
Newsarama has the Storms of Crait #1 preview pages. The comic is set during the original trilogy and will give some background on the planet we’ll see in the movie. (Crait also appeared in the Claudia Gray novel Leia: Princess of Alderaan.)
Are there any stormtroopers in The Last Jedi that won’t be played by famous (yet unseen) faces? John Boyega apparently confirmed the persistent rumors that Prince William, Prince Harry, and Tom Hardy donned the white stuff for cameos in the same scene. Daniel Craig, what have you wrought?
Another new commercial has a few new snippets of Finn footage, plus some new dialogue from him. (And a bit of new blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Rey as well.) There’s also a new international trailer in Spanish, but it doesn’t feature any new footage.
New footage spotted! A brief look at Kelly Marie Tran’s Rose Tico in action is a highlight of a spot for EDF Energy (okay…), while General Organa and Poe have a great exchange in a new commercial. (Another recent spot features new Finn footage!)
There’s also a great profile of Tran at Buzzfeed which is definitely worth a read. She talks about her background, Harry Potter, and Carrie Fisher in the gym. She teases that Rose has “has an interesting relationship with war.” She’s also one of The Hollywood Reporter’s Next Gen Talent picks.
There were also two big image reveals today: A new picture of Laura Dern as Amilyn Holdo came as part of a quick profile in Elle, and the IMAX poster in USA Today.
