Star Wars with occasional sarcasm
StarWars.com has an extensive slideshow of costume product images scanned in – hilariously – from old-school photo albums. Never had any of these myself, but remember the style well enough to can almost smell the plastic from those horrible masks… shudder.
For costumes that will actually wow folks in the here and now, check out this homemade AT-ST suit. There’s plenty of time to make your own for next year!
Back-to-School season is winding down, which means that on the retail calendar it’s time for Halloween! So of course StarWarsShop is selling costumes, including licensed sets of Vader and Stormtrooper armor that will set you back a thousand bucks. But most of them – including Jedi/Sith gear, kids stuff, and Plo Koon – sell for a more reasonable $40-75.
I do find it a tad amusing that Slave Leia and Geonosis Padme come from a line called ‘Secret Wishes.’ Presumably the baby oil is not included. For women who want to go a little more covered up, there’s also Asajj Ventress, plus Ahsoka for the younglings.
I’m sensing a theme today! Tricia Narwani over at Suvudu counts down the Best Fashion in Science Fiction and Fantasy, including Leia in ANH. I’m clearly a bad Star Wars fan because I never noticed her white boots, but they are pretty bitching in that ultra-70’s-space-chic Alderaani way. (Major props to Narwani for not going for the slave outfit: It does have truly awful shoes.)
Also name-dropped: Battlestar Galactica, Harry Potter and the White Witch in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. I won’t lie to you: Her chain-mail battle dress in that movie? Most kickass.
Interested in purchasing costumes and props from the Sci-Fi series Battlestar Galactica? Apollo’s or Starbuck’s flight suit? Admiral Adama’s uniform? full size Raptors or Vipers ? (will those even fit in my garage?) Propworx (which has handled Star Trek prop & costume auctions in the past) will be having a series of live and online auctions of 3,000 BSG costumes and props next year, and has started a blog of what they have found in production storage, found at www.battlestarprops.com.
There are several Star Wars items in the latest Profiles in History auction, including Threepio’s feet (above,) a TIE miniature, a Duros latex head cast, an Imperial Officer uniform and X-Wing master molds, all from from A New Hope. The Star Wars items are lots 901-905, but there’s plenty of sci-fi and action film items scattered throughout, including the Holy Grail from The Last Crusade (Lot 916.) You don’t have to be a collector to enjoy paging through the catalog PDF… (Thanks to Rach on the list!)
Museum Replicas’ Windlass Studios will make replica clothing and armor for Star Wars fans. They’ll have booths at the International Costume Show Las Vegas, San Diego Comic-Con and Dragon*Con. I’ll be interested to see how this is received by the costuming community…
You can be the proud owner of a custom-made, award-winning set of Modal Node costumes. Sadly, a thousand bucks does seem rather steep – you can get used Stormtrooper armor on eBay for about half that. (Thanks, James!)
Rebelscum has the results of their 2007 Halloween Costume Contest up. They got plenty of of cute, creative and just plain weird submissions.
IGN visits the Prince Caspian set, and comes back with costume details. It’s light on pretty dresses, but armor fans will be pleased.
