EUbits: New Rebellion-era miniseries coming from Dark Horse

Rebel HeistNews. Dark Horse revealed a new miniseries by Mind MGMT’s Matt Kindt, Rebel Heist, on Comic Book Resources last week. The four-issue series starts with a Han Solo issue in April and will feature art by Marco Castiello (Purge.)

Excerpt. There’s a bunch of Maul: Lockdown available at Random House’s catalog.

Interviews. John Ostrander and artist Jan Duursema are also on Comic Book Resources, talking Dawn of the Jedi, while Ostrander talks to Eleven-ThirtyEight.

Notes. John Jackson Miller has added production notes for Kenobi to his site.

Out this week: Zahn’s Scoundrels in paperback

scoundrels-cropIf you’ve been waiting for Timothy Zahn’s Scoundrels to hit in paperback, head to the bookstore today. For the comic fans, there’s Legacy #9 on Wednesday.

Novel-wise, that’s a wrap for 2013. Our next one, Darth Maul: Lockdown by Joe Schreiber, was recently pushed back a week to January 28. And there’s more Han coming in March with James S. A. Corey’s Empire and Rebellion: Honor Among Thieves, which Jason Fry says is “one of the best EU books I’ve read in a very long time.” (via)

Harassment in comics fandom hits home

For the past week or so, there’s been a storm brewing in comics fandom regarding Star Wars writer Brian Wood being accused of harassment by another comics creator, Tess Fowler. There’s been much written about this (on high-profile outlets like The Beat, The Mary Sue and Doctor Nerdlove; Wood himself has released a statement) but for those who haven’t been following, I found the most helpful roundup to be Beccatoria’s.

The incident Fowler writes of may be fairly low key by harassment – if not ethical – standards, but it’s still extremely skeevy and far, far from uncommon. Bad, drunken passes happen all the time, above and beyond conventions. And that’s the problem.

That kind of behavior is not acceptable. Whether it’s from a noted professional or just a random dude off the long boxes.

Feel free to give Wood the benefit of the doubt. I don’t know Tess Fowler; I’ve never met Wood. I certainly can’t vouch for her story or his response. But I’ve heard stories like this far, far too many times to instantly doubt that she’s telling the truth. (And when it comes to naming – or not naming – harassers, there’s simply no way to win.)

Awareness of harassment and harassers is important to fandom – all fandoms. All conventions. The more people talk about harassment, the more visibility we give it, the less we pretend that these things are isolated incidents, the more people won’t be afraid to speak up when it happens to them. To talk about it. To name names. To report. To, if nothing else, stand up and say THIS IS NOT OKAY.

Because it’s not okay.

Period.

UPDATE: Anne Scherbina, a former D.C. employee, has detailed more inappropriate behavior from Wood. And in Star Wars fandom, both Brian at Tosche Station and Tricia at Fangirl have weighed in.

Out this week: The Bounty Hunter Code, Frames

The Bounty Hunter Code: From the Files of Boba FettGet out your credit card, because two huge holiday books are coming this week. Today sees the release The Bounty Hunter Code: From the Files of Boba Fett. A follow-up to The Jedi Path and The Book of the Sith, it’s by Star Wars all-stars Daniel Wallace, Ryder Windham and Jason Fry.

There’s also a more affordable version of Frames. (The original, lest we forget, would run you a cool $3000.) And, for the paperback fans, the reprint of Drew Karpyshyn’s The Old Republic: Annihilation drops.

Meanwhile, Wednesday: Dark Times: A Spark Remains #4.

Coming up for the rest of the year, we have the Death Star Owner’s Technical Manual by Ryder Windham, Chris Reiff and Chris Trevas (November 5) and the Scoundrels paperback (November 26.)

Out this week: Making of eBooks, Legacy #8

Making of eBookReleasing Tuesday are the eBook versions of J. W. Rinzler’s Making of books for the original trilogy, featuring video, audio and other extra content. Random House has them priced at $17.99, but check your device’s marketplaces.

Comic fans can head to the shops on Wednesday for Legacy #8.

It’s also time to keep an eye out for the new Star Wars Insider, which features a Leia short story bu editor Jen Heddle.

Next week brings The Bounty Hunter Code: From the Files of Boba Fett (now dated to the 29th) and the still-pricey-but-not-ridiculously-so version of Frames.

And there’s a fairly recent update to our book release schedule – the Crucible paperback is scheduled for May 27.

NYCC: Star Wars at New York Comic Con

nycc-logo-2013-loThis weekend is New York Comic Con, and Star Wars will be out in full force – even more than their presence at San Diego Comic-Con back in July. From October 10 – 13, the Javits Center in New York City will be wall-to-wall fandom, and topping it off for Star Wars fans will be Pablo Hidalgo’s panel on Rebels on Saturday at 2:45 pm. On Tuesday, @StarWars warned that there will be a giveaway item at the Rebels panel – some sort of Imperial propaganda.

Del Rey announced their lineup of authors doing signings at their Star Wars Books booth (and free book giveaways), with John Jackson Miller, Drew Karpyshyn, J. W. Rinzler, Ryder Windham, Jason Fry, and Chris Reiff making appearances.

Rooqoo Depot has a great listing of more Star Wars goings-on, including a list of the Star Wars panels (Anthony Daniels! Origami! Making of Return of the Jedi!), as well as booth signings for DK Books and Dark Horse Comics.

Out this week: New Blu-Ray/DVD box sets

OT Blu-Ray/DVD pack (2013)No books this week, but there is one big release on Tuesday: Blu-ray/DVD combo packs of the two trilogies. These are the same cuts of the film we saw last time, just with DVD versions and new cover art, so it’s not that big a deal, but if you’re a collector or just need copies for some reason, it’s your lucky day.

Those looking for something new can turn to the comic store on Wednesday, as Star Wars #10 and the digest Ewoks: Shadows of Endor, plus a second Wild Space omnibus hit the shelves.

Next week may be a tad more exciting, at least for fans of The Clone Wars, as the S5 and Complete Series box sets will be dropping. For everyone else, there’ll be Star Wars Art: Concept, which also comes in a pricey limited edition set. io9 has a look at a few of the pieces.
