Star Wars out this week: Allegiance #2
Two new comics and a reprint trade are out this Wednesday, October 16. Allegiance #2 introduces us to Ackbar’s son as the Resistance heads to Mon Calamari (preview), while Return to Vader’s Castle #2 focuses on Asajj Ventress (preview). And the TIE Fighter miniseries, which connects to the Alphabet Squadron novel that came out a few months ago, is now in trade.

Another next-generation character is introduced in next week’s Allegiance #2: Admiral Gial Ackbar’s son, Aftab. And signs – well, a cardboard standee – point to him being in The Rise of Skywalker as well.

Get a first look inside Marvel’s upcoming Allegiance miniseries – their first entry in the Journey to The Rise of Skywalker – from Jedi Bibliothek. The pages – featuring Rey, Leia, Rose and Finn – are from the latest issue of Diamond’s Previews catalog and lack text.
We’ll likely get a more extensive preview closer to the issue’s release. Allegiance #1 is out October 9, followed by #2 on October 16, #3 on October 23 and #4 on October 30. The trade collection is expected in December.
On another hotly anticipated The Rise of Skywalker tie-in note, during an impromptu Twitter Q&A last week, writer Charles Soule said that only the first issue of The Rise of Kylo Ren will be out before the film – which could mean Wednesday, December 18, if they come out weekly ala Allegiance. (Which isn’t a guarantee.) That would put the first issue on shelves the same week as the movie, and just in time to be sold alongside the artbook and Visual Dictionary, which are out with the film on the 20th. But that’s just a guess – we’ll have to wait for the December solicitations before we know for sure.
However, be aware that release dates for comics this far out have been known to change – not as frequently as they did back in the Dark Horse days, but it’s not unknown. (That’s one reason I don’t note them on the upcoming releases page, and only do release posts off Diamond’s shipping list.)
Into the gap: Journey to the Rise of Skywalker books revealed
For May 4, StarWars.com has revealed the Journey to The Rise of Skywalker publishing slate. And this time, with a gap between films, we actually get several novels focusing on sequel trilogy characters.
From Del Rey, that means a new-to-Star Wars author, Rebecca Roanhorse, taking on Resistance Reborn, and Justina Ireland (Lando’s Luck) with the middle-grade Spark of the Resistance. Cavan Scott and Elsa Charretier also return with Choose Your Destiny: A Finn & Poe Adventure. From Marvel, there’s Allegiance, a miniseries involving Leia and the Mon Calamari. (Go into the galleries for more detail.)
It’s not in the gap, though: Kevin Shinick, another new-to-Star Wars author, has Force Collector, starring a “restless teenager” on Jakku prior to The Force Awakens.
Spark of the Resistance and A Finn & Poe Adventure are first out on October 4; The four-issue Allegiance begins October 9 and drops weekly through the 30th; Resistance Reborn is out November 12 and Force Collector on November 19.
For our nonfiction and reference offerings, we’ve got the same basic template we’ve seen since TFA. Phil Szostak’s The Art of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and Pablo Hidalgo’s The Rise of Skywalker: The Visual Dictionary are both due out the same day as the film: December 20.
A movie novelization isn’t expected until spring. There’s more of the usual kid stuff and sticker books at StarWars.com.
