Surprise! The Last Jedi won’t be making a Hall H appearance at SDCC (because D23, duh)

Lucasfilm and Star Wars will be at San Diego Comic-Con, but The Last Jedi won’t be taking a slot as one of the con’s big Hall H panels. The company told SDCC Blog that “our presence at SDCC 2017 will be focused on our booth on the convention floor, so there will be no press events or interview opportunities this year.”

The good news is that by the time SDCC rolls around, we may already have some movie news. Disney’s D23 Expo is the week before the mega-con, and Lucasfilm is part of their live action panel on Saturday, July 15. Speculation has it that we may get a behind-the-scenes featurette – something like what Lucasfilm brought to SDCC back in 2015. Rogue One launched theirs at Celebration Europe in 2016. Both were also July cons, so there’s an established pattern at work.

There may or may not be Han Solo news – there are rumblings about a title – but would anyone blame LFL if they keep quiet? On the other hand, giving a basic logline about the film beyond “young Han Solo” may help alleviate some of the ever-present wangst about its very existence. (A girl can dream.)

We probably will get some Star Wars news out of San Diego – it’s a frequent target for books, comics, collectibles and other things too minor league for D23 – but expect that anything big will be out on the 15th.

There’s still the question of that trailer, but I wonder if it’ll just turn out to be a shortened version of the first one? Stranger things have happened.

New (but brief) look behind the scenes of The Last Jedi

The British Film Institue has posted a brief video featuring trainees who are working on Star Wars. Most of the trainees are shown working on the Han Solo movie – and we do see cinematographer Bradford Young – but the headline is few brief peeks at the filming of The Last Jedi. The shots, which feature Rey and Captain Phasma, are from scenes that we see briefly in the trailer, but it is our first look at any new Last Jedi footage since then.

→ Some new information indicates we might see a second trailer this summer. D23 Expo (July 15) is teasing “never-before-seen footage,” but given that they group all their live-action films together, we’re not guaranteed anything Star Wars.

→ Adam Driver, in an interview that’s mostly about him presenting the daughter of a disabled veteran with a scholarship, says The Last Jedi creates “new rules for the Star Wars universe.”

Forces of Destiny begins airing July 3 on Youtube

Forces of Destiny will debut online July 3 – next Monday – on Disney’s Youtube channel. New shorts will then premiere on the channel every day at 10 a.m. PDT (1 p.m. EDT.)


Eight in total, the shorts will feature Rey, Jyn Erso, Leia Organa, Sabine Wren, Padme Amidala, Ahsoka Tano “and others.” (We get a glimpse of Luke, Yoda and… a tree in the preview video above. Is the tree female? Or is that supposed to be Anakin?)

Rebels’ Hera Syndulla will reportedly appear in an episode set during Return of the Jedi.

Their broadcast debut will be Sunday, July 9 on the Disney Channel. Merchandise drops in August – early looks at the toy packaging are floating around now.

Inferno Squadron exclusive coming to SDCC

Among the Star Wars exclusives for San Diego Comic-Con is a special edition of Christie Golden’s Battlefront II: Inferno Squadron. The book is officially out July 25, so this gives fans at the con (July 20-23) a few days jump on it, assuming they get there before it sells out. For now, there’s the first excerpt. The game’s star, Janina Gavankar, has an extended interview from her Star Wars Show apperance.

→ In addition to their Star Wars Adventures series, IDW will launch a with an 80-page The Force Awakens adaptation for young readers. It’s written by Alessandro Ferrari, with art from “a group of Disney artists.” Look for it in August.

→ Timothy Zahn talks writing and his latest Star Wars novel, Thrawn, with the New York Daily News. He reveals that he’s pitched two-more post-Thrawn novels on the character. (Though, as us Legends fans know, that doesn’t mean LFL will take him up on them.) He also has an extended version of his Star Wars Show interview.

Star Wars out this week: ‘The Screaming Citadel’ concludes

Two new comics and a reprint are coming to your favorite comic venue on Wednesday. Doctor Aphra #8 takes out ‘The Screaming Citadel’ crossover storyline, while Poe Dameron #16 looks deeper into the new villian. The reprint is a weird one: Called Droids Unplugged #1, it reprints shorter material from Poe Dameron #1, Star Wars #25 and Darth Maul #1. Marvel being Marvel, there’s an alternate cover version as well.
