Out this week: New Shadow Hunter, CEIII #3

You ought to be seeing the new edition of Michael Reaves’ Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter in stores today. It has a new cover and contains a new short story by James Luceno, ‘Restraint,’ as well as an older short, ‘Saboteur.’ I’d recommend caution – and buying the book in a real live bookstore – to make sure you have the right edition, since it doesn’t seem to have a fresh ISBN. The new cover, along with our comic release this week, is at the right.

There should be no issues with Wednesday’s lone comic release, Crimson Empire III: Empire Lost #3. It’s brand new.

And with that we official close out the 2011 releases. Up in two weeks, on January 10, we’ll get the first novel of the new year with Luceno’s Darth Plagueis.

Best of Star Wars in 2011: Comics

2011 brought us a plethora of Star Wars comics from Dark Horse. With 44 individual comic issues and 17 books (digests, trade paperbacks and omnibus collections), there was a lot for everyone, with nearly every era getting some stories. As part of Dark Horse’s 25th anniversary, the Star Wars lineup added some new titles (Jedi – The Dark Side, Darth Vader and the Lost Command, and Agent of the Empire), brought back some old favorites (Crimson Empire III) and finished up the Cade Skywalker storyline with the end of Legacy: War. Darth Vader and the Lost Command was Dark Horse’s bestselling Star Wars title of the year, which earned it a special hard-cover trade edition. While Haden Blackman’s tale of Vader on a mission filled with betrayal is a great story, I think there was another story that topped it to be the year’s best.

Harrison Ford returns to space in Ender’s Game

It was rumored several weeks back that the producers of the Ender’s Game movie were pursuing Harrison Ford to play Colonel Hyram Graff, and today it’s been confirmed that he’s signed on for the role.

The adaption of Orson Scott Card’s well-known novel, which will star Hugo’s Asa Butterfield as Ender, has been in the works for years – soon after The Phantom Menace, Jake Lloyd was being considered for the lead.

Digital Yoda appears on Russian TPM 3-D poster

Guess Maul won’t be headlining all the promotional materials for The Phantom Menace 3-D… A Russian poster features the CGI version of Yoda. Click on the thumbnail at right to see the full poster.

It’s no surprise that the CGI version will be featured, since the subpar Phantom Menace puppet version was entirely replaced on the Blu-ray version of the film, but it’s an interesting bit of trivia nonetheless.

Chewbacca wanted in Florida shooting

It’s a Christmas crime wave! Alas, unlike the ‘Jedi’ in Oregon, the West Palm Beach ‘Chewbacca’ was packing some actual firepower: He fired several shots over the roof of a vehicle, and is believed to be part of a gang “seeking retaliation for a drug rip off.”

West Palm Beach Police were dispatched to the 1300 block of 11th Street to reports of a shooting on Nov. 30. They later learned from the woman who witnessed the shooting that a man wearing a Chewbacca mask, along with 19-year-old Jodeci Lamar Window and 21-year-old Mario D. Johnson, had driven up to the home and began firing.

Just like in the Star Wars movies, Chewbacca played the role of sidekick in the West Palm Beach shooting, while sitting in the front passenger seat of the car. The woman identified Window as the driver and Johnson as the backseat passenger, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Both of Chewbacca’s pals have been arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The Wookiee is still at large.

Out this week: Knight Errant concludes Deluge arc

Wednesday brings Knight Errant: Deluge #5 to comic shops, the final issue of the arc. The series will be back with Escape in June.

We’ve one release coming up before the end of the year – a new paperback edition of Michael Reaves’ Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter, which contains a new short story by James Luceno. We’re not sure if the street dating is strict on this, but Del Rey says it’ll be out on the 27th.
