Star Wars out this week: Aphra, TIE Fighter and Thrawn at SDCC

Two new Star Wars comics are coming on Wednesday, July 17. Head to your preferred venue to nab Doctor Aphra #34 and TIE Fighter #4.

Also happening this week (Thursday-Sunday) is San Diego Comic Con, where attendees have the chance to get a special edition of Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn: Treason. The standard edition goes on sale next Tuesday.

We’re also hoping for some book news out of the con’s Lucasfilm Publishing panel Friday evening.

Jon Favreau already writing The Mandalorian S2

Sounds like The Mandalorian is getting a second season – Jon Favreau tells Jimmy Kimmel that he’s already begun writing it.

A second season of the show is hardly a surprise – after The Rise of Skywalker, the franchise won’t have any new movies until 2022, so the Disney+ series will likely be the franchise’s most high-profile new content for a time.

Meanwhile, a report says that one of the first season’s directors, Rick Famuyiwa, is in talks to direct episodes of Disney+’s second Star Wars series, which focuses on Rogue One’s Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and K-2SO (Alan Tudyk). They say he’s also attached to direct episodes of The Mandalorian‘s second season as well.

S1 of The Mandalorian will debut with Disney+ in November; The Cassian series is expected to begin shooting in the fall.

Galaxy’s Edge Resistance ride won’t open until December

The Rise of the Resistance ride at Galaxy’s Edge will open December 5 at Disney World and January 17 at Disneyland, the parks announced today.

Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland is open now with Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run as the sole ride. The Florida version, at Hollywood Studios, will open August 29.

Rise of the Resistance is supposedly the more ambitious of the two rides, which may account for the delay.

The Mandalorian gets a D23 spotlight in August

The Mandalorian is going to D23 – it will be part of the Disney+ presentation on Friday, August 23, with Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni. Lucasfilm will have a pavilion on the con floor, bringing at least a part of their SDCC trooper display.

What this means, basically: 10-20 minutes in the midst of a giant panel (it’ll be all the Disney+ stuff in one) and maybe they’ll release a trailer. It’s a big maybe, given they released none of the footage that was shown at the Celebration panel.

D23 Expo is being held at the Anaheim Convention Center from August 23-25. The first episode of The Mandalorian will launch with Disney+ on November 12.

Rise of Skywalker’s Sith Trooper to debut at SDCC

Our first – and maybe only? – bit of The Rise of Skywalker news out of San Diego Comic-Con has arrived, as Lucasfilm introduces the Sith trooper. Armor from the movie will be on display in Lucasfilm’s pavilion at the con, along with many of its trooper predecessors: Imperial stormtrooper, TIE pilot, death trooper, shoretrooper, biker scout, First Order stormtrooper, First Order TIE pilot and Captain Phasma. Various Sith trooper products will also be on sale at the con.

More about SDCC on this week’s Star Wars Show, which also includes an interview with Lando’s Luck and Spark of the Resistance author Justina Ireland:

Daisy Ridley on her Rise of Skywalker stunts, that Carrie hug

In an interview with USA Today, Daisy Ridley talks about Ophelia, The Rise of Skywalker, IX fan theories and more. On the stunt seen in the trailer:

I had learnt a version of it, but there was a risk of breaking ankles so I couldn’t do the full thing. But there’s a bit in the film where you see me upside down. It’s funny because I did 95% of my (stunts), but that’s the one thing I didn’t fully do. People are like, “Oh, that’s so cool,” and I’m like, “Ugh.”

And with Vulture, she discusses self care and the Leia hug we see in the trailer.

She was actually whispering, “This is a fucking long hug.”[Laughs.] I was trying to do my acting, like, “Oh my god, Carrie!” There wasn’t any discussion about what we were gonna do.

Homeland Security kept Rogue One’s Riz Ahmed from Celebration Chicago

At a recent leadership summit, Riz Ahmed talked about Muslim representation in Hollywood and revealed that he was stopped at the airport in April, keeping him from Celebration Chicago.

Pointing to [Hasan] Minhaj, he said “He can win a Peabody, I can win an Emmy, Ibtihaj Muhammad can go to the Olympics, but some of these obstacles are systemic and we can’t really face them alone, we need your help. I’m basically here to ask for your help, because it’s really scary to be a Muslim right now, super scary. I’ve often wondered, is this going to be the year when they round us up, if this is going to be the year they put Trump’s registry into action. If this is going to be the year they ship us all off.”

Minhaj, Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Foxx and Eva Longoria also took part in the summit.

Star Wars out this week: Age of Resistance begins with Finn
