It’s official: Peter Capaldi is the 12th Doctor

Peter Capaldi

As predicted, the BBC has announced that Peter Capaldi will be the next Doctor.

At 55, he’ll be the oldest Doctor since the days of classic Who. Matt Smith, the current Doctor, was the youngest ever when his casting was announced, at 26.

Capaldi is well known in the U.K., mostly recently for his role on the comedy The Thick of It. He’s previously appear on Doctor Who in 2008’s ‘The Fires of Pompeii’ – an episode that also included future companion Karen Gillian in a bit part – and on the Who spinoff Torchwood.

  1. If they weren’t going to shift the sex of the Doctor, I think he’s pretty good. Tennant was by far the best young Doctor we were going to get. Matt Smith was okay, but it just never really gelled well for me. Peter Capaldi was great in Skins and in the other small roles I’ve seen him in.

  2. Matt Smith is my favorite, followed by Eccleston. Tennant was fine, but I found him rather tedious at times and could never really get into the show during his tenure. (Of course, I didn’t love Eccleston until I went back to him after Smith hooked me, but such as it is.)

Capaldi? Well, it’s impossible to tell at this point, but he certainly has a lot of potential.

  3. David Tennant is my favorite Doctor…no one else is even close although I do like both Smith and Eccleston. I have great hopes for Capaldi who was terrific on Torchwood.
