What is a Filk?

Loosely translated, a filk is a song parody, usually of a comedic or satirical nature. Lyrics of an established song are replaced with those that focus on different subject matter, usually making fun of it, while still retaining much the same feel, rhyme, and/or wording of the original song (and often making fun of it, too). The most well-known example of this type of song is the work of "Weird" Al Yankovic.

In CJ terminology, a filk is usually fandom or CJ-specific, and is traditionally performed in front of the crowd at JadeCon, usually while intoxicated.

Filking has a long history among SF/F and media fans, however. The filks archived here are only those by CJ and friends - there's a wide world of filking outside of the confines of CJ. Check out the links at right for more on filks and filking.
