Straczynski shows interest in Trek

TrekToday reports that Babylon 5‘s J. Michael Straczynski has spoken to Paramount executives about a Battlestar Galactica-style “reboot” of the classic series. Paramount is sticking firm on giving the Trek franchise a rest, but it’s an interesting possibility, seeing as Trek was never quite the total crap that the original BSG was. And didn’t TNG basically serve the same purpose as a reboot?

Still, the concept of Straczynski running Star Trek, any Star Trek, is enough to keep the fanboys awake at night.

BBC pioneers TV/radio downloads

The BBC will launch the second phase of its iMP (interactive Media Player) program (er… programme) in September. This will allow test viewers to legally download BBC television and radio programming to their computers for seven days after original broadcast.

“iMP could just be the iTunes for the broadcast industry, enabling our audience to access our TV and radio programmes on their terms – anytime, any place, any how,” said Ashley Highfield, BBC director of new media and technology.

Wahoo! This is great news for fans for Brit shows like Dr Who, Ab Fab, Book at Bedtime and Eastenders.

What we’ll be watching… maybe.

Networks are announcing schedules for next year. Since I’m only bothering with the genre stuff, a full sked is available here.

ABC
Lost moves up the the 9p.m. slot on Wednesday; Alias to Thursdays at 8p.m, verses Survivor. Following Alias is a remake of Kolchak: Night Stalker from Frank Spotnitz, former executive producer of The X-Files, starring Stuart “Almost Aragorn” Townsend.

NBC
New drama Fathom “revolves around the search for mysterious creatures of the ocean.”

CBS
Would Joan of Arcadia be considered genre? Hmm. Reportedly, it’s on the bubble; CBS announces their new schedule tomorrow, but may be adding several genre shows. However, one of them stars Jennifer Love Hewitt, so chances are it’s doomed one way or another.

Fox
Genre be damned, Arrested Development is renewed! They’ll be announcing the schedule on Thursday, but here are a few pilots that may get the green light: David Boreanaz (Angel) stars in Bones, a crime investigations drama; also Briar & Graves, a “drama about religious phenomena”.

The WB
Charmed remains on Sunday; Smallville moves to Thursday. A new show, Supernatural, debuts Tuesday at 9p.m., capitalizing on star Jared Padalecki’s stance as former Gilmore Girls good boy. Also starring is Jensen Ackles, who may be recognized by fans of Smallville, Dark Angel, and Days of our Lives.

UPN
More Veronica Mars next year… That’s about it. Unless you’re a big
Shannen Doherty fan.

A Beginner’s Guide To “Lost”

Something Awful has posted a hilarious beginner’s guide to “Lost.”

When Lost premiered on ABC, it ruined the channel’s long-standing tradition of not having very many viewers. Mixing drama, mystery, adventure and suspense in a unique way, it’s a terrific show. The only people I personally know who don’t like it only watched one or two random episodes several weeks after it started, which is a lot like walking in on your parents having sex mid-coitus instead of hiding in the closet beforehand and getting the full experience. Want to see what all the fuss is about but missed the beginning? Fret not, I’ll get you caught up.

When does this show come out on DVD?

Eccleston quits Dr Who

Christopher Eccleston quits his role as Dr Who just one day after the BBC ordered a second season of the cult classic.

Eccleston, whose first appearance as the ninth Doctor attracted 10 million viewers, said he feared being typecast.

Bookies have tipped Casanova actor David Tennant as the hot favourite to replace Eccleston as the Time Lord, with odds of 1/10.

Other contenders for the role include Bill Nighy and comedian Eddie Izzard.
