The second half of Doctor Who’s seventh season begins today with ‘The Bells of Saint John.’ (Naturally, there’s a prequel.) But we knew that, right?
The Who news today is that at least two of the show’s previous stars will be returning for the 50th Anniversary special. And there’s a new face for Who as well: John Hurt. The special begins filming this week

The Veronica Mars Movie Project has been the talk of the pop culture internet today. It’s revolutionary and somewhat controversial – if the Kickstarter reaches $2 million dollars, they’ll make a movie to wrap up the series. Creator and showrunner Rob Thomas made a deal with Warner Brothers, who owns the show – fans fund the movie and Warner will distribute it
It quickly became the fastest-growing Kickstarter film campaign, and they literally reached their goal as I wrote this post. (Anything above the goal will also go towards making the film.)
Veronica Mars, for the uninitiated, was a TV series that ran for 3 seasons (2004-07) on UPN and the CW. Starring Kristen Bell in the title role, it was a show ahead of its time, a high school film noir set in a town filled with elevated levels of class conflict and, yeah, those slow-brewing season-long arcs that are now all the rage. (Thanks, Lost!) And, no, it might never have recaptured the glory of the first season – one of the best seasons of broadcast TV ever, IMO – but fans were still sad to see it go.
A few months ago I discovered the show rerunning on SoapNet, and got addicted all over again, so this could not have happened at a better time for them to take my money. Yes, I donated. I’m not going to tell you to do so too, but I do suggest you go watch season 1. (Watch it for free at theWB.com, or it’s free to stream on Amazon for Prime members.) I hope you won’t be disappointed.
Cartoon Network has put out their lineup for the 2013-2014 season, using a multi-city road tour for the next few weeks to promote their new and returning shows. Most notably, they are hyping three quarterly specials for LEGO Star Wars: The Yoda Chronicles, and saying nothing about the return of The Clone Wars. Does this mean that The Clone Wars is leaving Cartoon Network for the fall? Or just that it is still in negotiation (ie, they can’t announce anything yet)? They list their returning shows, and the adventures of Skyguy and Snips aren’t on it.
But here’s the description of The Yoda Chronicles:
LEGO Star Wars returns in epic style with THE YODA CHRONICLES, a thrilling, funny and action-packed new LEGO Star Wars story told in three animated TV specials! Set in the “Prequel” Star Wars timeline, THE YODA CHRONICLES stars the one and only Yoda—the Jedi Master who has seen it all, done it all, and taught generations of Jedi Knights—in an all-new adventure. With the help of a fresh class of Padawans, Yoda leads the Jedi in a desperate fight to stop Darth Sidious and his minions from creating a new super-weapon that could crush the Republic and win the war for the forces of Evil.
Some of those news articles are claiming that the Yoda Chronicles are set in the original trilogy timeframe – I think this definitively says “prequel era” with such keywords as Republic.
Back to The Clone Wars: Is this the end of the show, or will Disney XD (or another Disney channel) be picking it up? We know that they have been working on season six, and perhaps a network change has prevented them from talking about it much officially.

EDIT: While the list of returning shows (and new shows like Teen Titans Go! and Total Drama All Stars) is primarily for their prime-time lineup on weeknights, there is also the lack of their DC Nation block of cartoons (Green Lantern, Young Justice, etc.), which follows The Clone Wars on Saturday mornings. Is the Saturday morning crowd just not big enough to mention in their release? However, other shows which have been aired on Saturdays are listed in their returning shows: Beyblade: Metal Fury and Pokemon: Black and White – are they being bumped up to primetime, or are they anchoring the Saturday morning timeslot. What does this also mean for the DC Nation shows? Just like Clone Wars, are they not important enough to list, still in negotiation, or not coming back? It seems that most comic books sites are calling Green Lantern and Young Justice as cancelled.

As part of the build-up to the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, BBC America will be airing some classic Doctor Who story arcs, starting tonight (January 27)! Catch up with the First Doctor in ‘The Aztecs’ after the first in a series of specials on all the Doctors (The Doctors Revisited) at 9 pm Eastern. This classic Who will have to hold us over until our current Doctor returns, with his new Companion, on March 30.
Her Universe has revealed their Cyber Monday exclusives! Yesterday, we found out that The Clone Wars brought in David Tennant, who played the Tenth Doctor. Today? The BBC announces that Warwick Davis is guesting on Doctor Who. (Doctor Who fans: That link may also contain spoilers, if you don’t want to know who the episode’s villains will be!)
Davis will appear in the current season’s penultimate episode, which was scripted by writer Neil Gaiman. Gaiman’s first Who episode, ‘The Doctor’s Wife,’ won a Hugo.
Davis began his career playing Wicket in Return of the Jedi and has since appeared in The Phantom Menace and the Harry Potter films. His most recent role was starring as ‘himself’ in the sitcom Life’s Too Short.
Doctor Who is currently on hiatus – the second half of the seventh season (or, yes, series if you’re going to Brit-pick) will start on Christmas and continue with eight episodes through the spring. That’s when we’ll see Davis’ episode.
