Marvel, Netflix team up for four series’, mini-series event; Could Star Wars be next?
Ahead of this afternoon’s Disney earning call, Marvel and Netflix have announced that they’re teaming up to produce for original 13-episode series’ featuring the characters Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage, that cumulate in a Defenders mini-series.
Disney already has a distribution deal with Netflix that will make them “the exclusive U.S. subscription television service for first-run, live-action and animated movies,” including Lucasfilm. (That deal starts in 2016, which means the 2014 ‘digital library’ hint is still open to interpretation.) Could this Marvel deal foreshadow something similar with Star Wars eventually? It’s early yet, but keep it in mind for the future.

This trailer for the 50th Anniversary special doesn’t actually contain any footage for the special, but it is a pretty fascinating watch for Who fans, a great tribute to the show’s half-century and various Doctors.

Report: Marvel developing Agent Carter for TV
Marvel may not have any (announced) movies with an undisputed female lead in the pipeline, but could they have a TV show? Deadline reports that they’re currently developing a show based on Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter. Atwell recently starred in Agent Carter, a short film on the Iron Man 3 DVD, that takes the character beyond the events of 2011’s Captain America. The short was well-received by early audiences.
Atwell’s return isn’t a sure thing, and the show going forward will no doubt be somewhat dependent on how Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. does, but it’s a welcome development. The Iron Man 3 DVD and S.H.I.E.L.D. both debut next Tuesday
Corey’s Expanse series to be developed for TV
Iron Man writers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby will are scripting a pilot based on the The Expanse space opera series by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, Variety reports.
“The Expanse” will be an hourlong scifi drama with elements of a detective procedural, centring on a cover-up of the discovery of alien life. Alcon [Television Group] said it is developing the project in direct-to-series fashion internally before shopping to networks.
I’ll be interested to see how the books translate to screen; I raved about the first two way back in January and I still recommend it after Abaddon’s Gate, came out in June.
Abraham and Franck, who co-write under the Corey pen name, just turned in the final version of upcoming Star Wars novel, Honor Among Thieves, into Del Rey.
Hamill vs. Hamill: Joker voices Palpatine
This mashup replaces Palpatine’s vocals with those of Hamill’s animated/video game Joker – and swaps Darth Vader’s dialouge for Tom Hardy’s Bane from The Dark Knight Rises. It’s a little weird and a little hilarious. (via)
Legend of Korra returns September 13
Good news for everyone who enjoys sleeping in on Saturday mornings: Nickelodeon is now premiering the show Friday night at 7, starting the new season (well, Book 2) on September 13.
Book 2 will run 14 episodes, 2 more than Book 1; Books 3 and 4 are also in the pipeline.
It’s official: Peter Capaldi is the 12th Doctor
As predicted, the BBC has announced that Peter Capaldi will be the next Doctor.
At 55, he’ll be the oldest Doctor since the days of classic Who. Matt Smith, the current Doctor, was the youngest ever when his casting was announced, at 26.
Capaldi is well known in the U.K., mostly recently for his role on the comedy The Thick of It. He’s previously appear on Doctor Who in 2008’s ‘The Fires of Pompeii’ – an episode that also included future companion Karen Gillian in a bit part – and on the Who spinoff Torchwood.

Back in April, Patton Oswalt appeared on Parks and Rec and delivered a citizen filibuster outlining his plot for Star Wars episode VII, incorporating the Marvel universe, and a full version of the improvised rant popped up on the internet for all to see.
