Geekier than thou?

Thanks to the Stooge for this one – The Onion’s A.V. Club points out twenty pop-cultural obsessions even geekier than Monty Python. While Star Trek is #1, there’s not much about Star Wars, although there are plenty of entries about things that SW fans do and like, including BSG, Joss Whedon, roleplaying games. (namecheck!) Dr. Who… Plus something I had a lot of high school friends obsessing over for reasons I to this day do not understand, Magic: The Gathering. And for the final blow… Fanfic. Sigh. At least they acknowledge it “isn’t always relegated to weird, unnecessarily erotic original stories with awkward dialogue, plot holes, and spelling errors…” Yeah…

But man, game-show tape trading? That’s just crazy.

Home Cinema Heaven

I was thrilled when we could finally replace our old television that we left by a dumpster with one that has all of its colors and doesn’t unexpectedly change channels. The owners of these amazing geek chic home cinemas apparently have far higher standards in mind for their media viewing experience. Especially impressive is “The Bridge” that one guy actually built by himself. DIY insanity!

Dr. Phil disses Star Wars widow

It’s a problem many mixed marriages have to deal with: how does a mundane deal with the geek’s fascination with all things Star Wars?

Well, the issue was raised to national prominence when the wife took her issue to Dr. Phil. The celeb-doc chastised our intrepid fan on the air, but then leaned over after the taping to show a bit of sympathy towards him.

Valentine’s Day is approaching, my fellow geeks. If you have a mundane as a spouse, now is the time to start thinking of something non-fandom to give them!

Girls have superheroes, too

Cath Elliott has a rebuttal to the UK report that focuses on ‘boy’ play.

Superheroes with special powers aren’t the sole preserve of boys and men, and they haven’t been since Batman first came face to face with Catwoman. It might be an idea if the denizens of the DCSF got themselves up to speed with popular culture before pronouncing on children’s fantasy play, if only to save our daughters from being excluded from all the fun when the nursery teachers ring the bell for “Spiderman time”.

News: Clearly it’s time for a Star Wars baby

El Paso’s first baby of 2008 is Abigail Leia. Her parents, Susana and Roger Taber, also have two sons named Lucas and Anakin. (via)
