Razzies crown Shyamalan’s Airbender worst film of 2010

The Oscars are upon us tonight! But in the meantime, we have the Razzies, which last night awarded M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, Worst Eye-Gouging Misuse of 3-D and even Worst Supporting Actor in Jackson Rathbone, who was dual-nominated for Twilight: Eclipse.

Surprisingly, that’s the only ‘award’ for any of the Twilight crew – and all the other genre offerings. Sex and the City 2 was the runner-up with three Razzies, including Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off or Sequel and Worst Actress for Sarah Jessica Parker. The remaining acting awards went to Ashton Kutcher and Jessica Alba.

Can fans help Nathan Fillion buy Firefly rights?

Oh, Nathan Fillion, you should know better than to put something out there as tantalizing as a wish to buy the rights to Firefly.

Just a few days back, he made a comment to Entertainment Weekly that he’d happily buy the rights to Firefly and put new content on the internet if he won $300 milion in the lottery. Now that same wacky spirit that helped the Browncoats get a movie made out of a cancelled series is pulling together to raise the funds. (Smartly, no actual funds are being collected. They have learned from past Trek-related disasters.)

As Entertainment Weekly rightly points out, even if folks could raise the funds, it would be difficult to convince 20th Century Fox to let go of the rights. And then there’s the whole “gettin’ the band back together” problem.

But still. Nearly everyone in the cast and production team have a mighty love for the franchise. And it’s hard to tell a Browncoat something can’t be done. They might be just the people to figure out how to pull off a mass funding of a television/movie production. Ya just never know.

Wouldn’t that be shiny?

Inception, Iron Man 2, Portman round out Oscar nods for genre fans

Per usual there isn’t a whole lot in the Oscars for genre fans, though Inception did pretty well for itself with 8 nominations, including Best Picture. Christopher Nolan’s best director snub is making plenty of folks cranky, as is Daft Punk not getting a nod for their Tron: Legacy soundtrack. (Hell, Tron is only up for one award – Sound Editing. Ouch.)

And of course we have Star Wars alumni Natalie Portman up for Best Actress for Black Swan. Head over to StarWars.com for the full list of alumni, ILM, and Skywalker sound nods. Iron Man 2 is ILM’s sole nominee for the VFX – it’ll face Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, Hereafter and, naturally, Inception.

Also interesting is the supporting nomination for True Grit’s Hailee Steinfeld. It’s not a genre film, but Steinfeld is increasingly being talked up as a possibility to play Katniss in The Hunger Games adaption — even if she doesn’t get the Oscar this ups her profile considerably.

Eclipse, Airbender lead Razzie nominations

True confession: The Razzies are my favorite movie awards, particularly in years that gave them plenty of crap to sift through. We’ve been so blessed this year: Genre nominations for worst picture include The Last Airbender and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, as well as the Matt Lanter-led spoof Vampires Suck.

Lanter was spared an lead acting nom, though nods went to Twilight’s Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart as well as Jonah Hex’s Megan Fox. In the supporting categories, Airbender’s Nicola Peltz, Dev Patel and Jackson Rathbone (also for Eclipse) all got nods. And not to leave anyone out, both Eclipse and Airbender are up for Worst Screen Ensemble.

Both films, plus Vampires Suck, also hold court in Worst Director, Worst Screenplay (if Shyamalan isn’t a lock for that, I’ll eat my ATLA DVDs) and Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off or Sequel.

In the brand-new Worst Eye-Gouging Mis-Use of 3-D category, the nominations are Cats & Dogs 2: Revenge of Kitty Galore, Clash of the Titans, The Last Airbender, Nutcracker 3-D and Saw VII.

Basically, you know it’s a good/bad year when a dud like Clash of the Titans can’t muster up more than two nominations.

In the news: Giddy Portman wins Golden Globe

Honors. Natalie Portman took home a Best Actress Golden Globe last night for Black Swan. We’ll chock up her joyful but rambly acceptance speech to pregnancy hormones.

Goals. Carrie Fisher is Jenny Craig’s newest celebrity spokesperson. “I would like to have the option of getting back into the metal bikini. I won’t be doing that, but I’d like the option,” she told UsMagazine.com.

Sports. I don’t get this in the least and it’s no doubt irrevelant at this point, but the deep thinkers at the New York Post pulled out a Return of the Jedi spoof/thing last week. I hear the Jets won, if that means anything.

In the world… Hollywood cameras keep rolling in Tunisia (Tatooine) through political turmoil.

And the rest: Wonder Woman may not have a new TV show, but she does get a makeup line

Her TV show revival may be dead (or is it?) but MAC Cosmetics is releasing a limited edition line of products inspired by Wonder Woman. (Get a closer look at Vampy Varnish – Pending swatches, I might actually spring for the nail polish.) MAC has previously released a Disney Villains collection.

More superheros, less makeup. If you weren’t on the internet yesterday, you might not have heard that Sony released the first picture of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man. (If you were on the internet yesterday, I apologize for being the last in a very long line.) Also debuting: Chris Evans in his full Captain America getup.

I have a bad feeling about this… 41,763 people won $150 in cash by playing Hurley’s numbers from Lost in the Mega Millions lottery.

Carlos the Dwarf approves. NBC’s Community – which you really ought to be watching, if you aren’t already – will have a Dungeons & Dragons-themed episode.

ESB added to National Film Registry

Episode V is #3It was announced this morning that The Empire Strikes Back is one of 25 films that the Library of Congress is making part of the National Film Registry this year.

But that’s not the only Lucas production making it in this year – Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB, not the feature film, but George’s student short – has also been added. (Random…) Star Wars and American Graffiti are already a part of the registry.

Saturday Night Fever, The Exorcist, All the President’s Men, The Pink Panther and Airplane! also made the cut for 2010.
