Hamill to play Joker?

The Internet Movie Database reports that Mark Hamill is in the running to play the Joker in the sequel to “Batman Begins.”

The actor, who played Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi, has become a fan favorite to play Batman’s colorful foe. He joins Crispin Glover and Aussie actor Lachy Hulme on the three-strong internet shortlist.

Hamill became an obvious choice for some Batman fans after voicing The Joker for the Batman cartoon series. A spokesman for top Batman website Darkhorizons.Com points out, “The net basically picked Christian Bale to play Batman, so who knows.” Batman Begins opens across America and Europe this week.

Shatner serenades Lucas

At the AFI Lifetime Achievement award presentation. Really. Like we could make this up.

William Shatner — Capt. Kirk from another great space saga, “Star Trek” — offered a musical number “from one star voyager to another.” He performed a variation of “My Way,” telling Lucas “you did it your way” while dancers in “Star Wars” stormtrooper costumes did a chorus line routine.

Thanks to Jessa for the head’s up!

Edit: The AFI show honouring Lucas will air June 20 on the USA Network.

X-Men 3 finally finds director

And it’s Brett Ratner. Who? He did Rush Hour. Did anyone here actually see Rush Hour? Anyone?

Yeah. That’s hopeful. There’s an interview over at MTV, if you’re curious:

Ratner insists that the “X-Men 3” script is up to snuff, that production will commence in Vancouver, British Columbia, in eight weeks, and that series stars Halle Berry, Hugh Jackman, James Marsden and Rebecca Romijn will return. As for what he’ll add to the successful Singer recipe, the director said, “I want to stay true to the franchise and true to the characters, but I think it’s elevated … I don’t want to be pompous and say I’m going to take it to the next level. I think the script that Simon Kinberg and Zak Penn wrote gives me a tremendous amount of confidence.”

He also said you can expect his X-Men to have an enhanced sense of humor. “Not jokes for the sake of jokes,” Ratner added, “jokes that come from character humor, that come from characters and that come from the situations.”

He also reveals that Singer left not because of the lure of Superman, but because he didn’t like the script.

The news bombs are dropping fast now, and the Movie Blog has some tidbits.

But really, we’ll just have to wait and see. Bad cynic.

Other superhero film news shamelessly culled from The Movie Blog:
Batman Begins reviews coming in.
Producers of Smallville visit set of Singer’s Superman.
J. Michael Straczynski likes the V for Vendetta script.
Fantastic Four stars signed for sequels.

Four Times the Ewan!

It’s the dream of Ewan worshippers everywhere! No, Obi-Wan hasn’t fallen victim to the Kaminoans. But there will be four roles for Ewan McGregor in his upcoming film.

Empire Online notes a couple of links to Star Wars in this:

Sir Alec Guinness (who was old Obi-Wan to Ewan’s Young Obi-Wan, of course) played multiple roles in some of his Ealing comedies.

And the screenwriter is the same one who wrote Local Hero starring Denis Lawson who is, of course, the uncle of Ewan McGregor and who also played Wedge (Wedge!) in the Classic Trilogy.

Star Wars causes all sorts of incestuousness, doesn’t it?

Pirates and Clones!

With all the fervor over ROTS it’s easy to forget other movies to be excited about.

The trailer for Ewan McGregor’s next movie — “The Island” — is now available online. It’s different than the one that’s been playing before some showings of ROTS.

And Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley recently talked about the sequels to “Pirates of the Caribbean.” Spoilers, ahoy.
