You know how Hollywood is; they love to repeat themselves. Now, (almost) everyone loves a sequel, but the worst trend is when two studios have competing versions of almost the same exact kind of movie. This year it’s magic, or rather, Victorian era stage magic that may be the real thing! Gasp! Yawn!
Your choices: Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige, staring Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman and Scarlett Johansson or The Illusionist with Edward Norton, Jessica Biel, Paul Giamatti and my ever-evil Hollywood boyfriend Rufus Sewell.
To their credit, the trailers do make the films look as different as, say, Elizabeth and Shakespeare in Love turned out to be. We can hope.

CNBC reported yesterday that Pirates of the Caribbean beat Aquaman’s box office record.
Pirates did smash records, but James Cameron’s Aquaman – and its killer box office – only exist as a plot point on HBO’s Entourage. The cable network did take out an ad in Variety last month touting the fictional milestone, which no doubt prompted the mistake.
ETA: Or not. The anchor was joking.
In addition to breaking Revenge of the Sith’s record for best opening day, Jack Sparrow and crew also smashed Spider-Man’s record for best opening weekend, earning a whooping $132 million.

The old rumor that Natalie Portman may be playing Indiana Jones’ daughter in Indy 4 resurfaces yet again, thanks to Raiders of the Lost Ark’s Karen Allen. Cinematical reports that she mentioned that Portman had been cast. A comment by the runner of an Allen fansite at Cinematical claims the actress heard it from him, not from an inside source. In any case, I remain skeptical.
Preliminary estimates from Disney have Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest earning $55.5 million on Friday, beating Sith’s 2005 record for largest one-day box office take.
We’ll know for sure on Monday.
