Today would have been JRR Tolkien’s 113th birthday. You can post a toast in honour of the Professor on the Tolkien Society website. Or just read what others have said.
Seems a fitting way to remember a great storyteller.

AICN has a link to some very interesting and apparently not officially released photos from “Revenge of the Sith.”
Needless to say… SPOILERS!
Ewan McGregor is putting his new position as UNICEF ambassador to good use by calling for donations to help the children of Asia.
He says:
‘UNICEF need $25 million (
Orlando Bloom is the male whose name was most frequently searched for on Google in 2004. And it wasn’t all my doing. I swear!
The Times (UK) also reports:
Bloom’s rise to global stardom is revealed in a study that claims to capture the spirit of the age. However, the Google Zeitgeist report also reveals that despite efforts to promote a more wholesome web, less noble instincts continue to dominate cyberspace.
Must be all that Hobbit slash. ;)
Almost as pretty as the original and cheaper to keep in rum. Three cheers for vinyl men! And thanks to Denise for the head’s up.
“Welcome to the Caribbean, Luv.”
… okay, twenty-seven years ago yesterday, Star Wars opened with much fanfare to packed houses in the United Kingdom. Tickets were booked until March. Payback for Beatlemania, I say.
The official site for “Kingdom of Heaven” is up. Character listing. Story synopsis. The trailer in three sizes. All of the good. Not a whole lot of substance though.
AICN also had an early review from someone guy who saw a test screening a couple of weeks back. Full of spoilers, but quite positive.
A May 6 release date, at the start of the big movie season, and just two weeks before “Revenge of the Sith,” suggests the studio has quite a bit of confidence in it.
The “Kingdom of Heaven” trailer is now available online!
Chainmail. Big swords. Liam Neeson. And some guy called Orlando Bloom (who will apparently be wearing a chest-hair wig — I couldn’t make that up if I tried).
What’s not to love?
Boromir collecting for Salvation Army. The message on the One Ring reading “Remember to drink your Ovaltine.” Gollum receiving the gift of Hanson. Aragorn asking Santa for Legolas for Christmas. And so many more.
The folks at Something Awful have out done themselves this time.
Jessa suggests they’d make outstanding gift tags. Brilliant!
Thanks to Pablo and Bonnie for the head’s up.
Literary analysis. Scholarly essays. Academic review.
If all of that makes your heart beat faster (with joy, not fear), have we got the website for you! A group of fans have just started a very promising looking online journal entitled Saga Journal.
Here’s the skinny:
Here at the Saga Journal, we believe Star Wars is more than just an enjoyable space opera set in a galaxy far, far away. We recognize it as a modern myth, a cultural phenomenon all its own. We want to encourage the literary exploration of all aspects of the story as presented in the Prequel and Original Trilogy films.
And, yes, they are seeking submissions.
