More on “Long Way Down”

At a recent book signing, Charley Boorman shared some more information about his and Ewan’s next adventure

Following a three-month trip motorbiking around the world with film star Ewan McGregor, actor Charley Boorman is keen to get back on the road.

“We’re hoping to do the Paris-Dakar race this year and then, if all goes well, Ewan and I will go from London to Capetown through Africa,” he said at last Thursday’s opening of the Borders store in Brent Cross shopping centre.

Fantastic essay on Obi-Wan!

The ever-eloquent randomalia has posted a wonderful essay on the character of Obi-Wan Kenobi to the idol_reflection community on LiveJournal.

Especially interesting are her insights into the complex relationships between Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan and Anakin:

Obi-Wan’s most formative years are with Qui-Gon, and as their relationship deepened, Obi-Wan developed an unshakable loyalty to his Master, one he keeps with him throughout his life. It is this devotion that drives Obi-Wan to promise to train Anakin, though it goes against his wishes and judgment. That promise is given without hesitation, simply because Qui-Gon asks for it. In this way, Obi-Wan’s experiences with this Jedi tradition continue to be unusual. He was not chosen, and does not choose his own apprentice, a fact that lies deep at the heart of the difficulties between Obi-Wan and Anakin.

I cannot recommend this essay highly enough. No spoilers for “Revenge of the Sith”.

Geekdom shrouded in academia!

What’s not love about a new collection of essays entitled “Tolkien on Film: Essays on Peter Jackson

This collection of essays addresses various aspects of Peter Jackson’s film adaptations of Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings including scriptwriting and the creative process, the place of the films in cinematic history, gender roles in the films and the books, wisdom and councils, hobbits and heroism, fan culture and fanfic, the use of Tolkien’s languages in the films, and other issues.

The essays on fan fiction and gender roles alone look worth the $20 (plus shipping and handling).

Long Way Down!

Ewan News is reporting that Mr Gregor and his pal Charley Boorman are planning to conquer Africa for their next motorbike trip.

Long Way Down is apparently the title of Ewan and Charley’s next motorbike project, according to Charley, who appeared at the London motorbike show. The project will have Ewan and Charley travel to Cape Town, South Africa, and will be filmed like Long Way Round.
