And Harry Marks the Spot

Harry Potter author JK Rowling committed an act of vandalism as she completed the final book in the series. She cemented the occasion by writing on an antique-style statue in a hotel in Edinburgh.

So. If you’re this hotel, do you replace the statue? Or leave it?

In related news, JK Rowling has decided there will be no e-book version of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

And (are we at all surprised here?) pre-orders have set an all-time record.

Online TV Show Coming: Sanctuary

GateWorld got a heads-up from Stargate producer/director Martin Wood about an online TV show that has just finished filming its fourth episode called Sanctuary.

Little is known about the story, but it will be a regular-length TV show that will apparently have some sort of interactive part to it. Happily, it will be available to all internet users, so none of those pesky spoiler problems to deal with.

It stars Amanda Tapping (aka Samantha Carter) and Christopher Heyerdahl (aka Halling) from the Stargate franchise. David Hewlett (aka Rodney McKay) makes a guest appearance.

In the wake of SG1’s cancellation, there has been a lot of discussion about the future direction of TV. Could this be it?

Book Review: You can draw Star Wars

You Can Draw Star WarsSo Bonnie Burton (of StarWars.com fame) put together her first Star Wars book (although not her first book) on how to draw Star Wars called You Can Draw Star Wars. It’s from a series called “You can draw…”. So I decided to see if the claim held true.

Y’see. I can’t draw. I’m fairly limited to stick fingers or flowers. (Really ugly flowers.) So I pulled together a couple of friends (some of whom have actual talent) to see if we could follow along with the instructions.

I’m pleased to say that despite ignoring all the real artistic instruction included in the book, we were able to dive in and attempt Yoda. And even though mine came out looking like a wax figure left too close to the fire, you could honestly say that all of our attempts looked like Yoda.

Even if you’re not into drawing, the book is a pleasant read for the various facts and thoughts about Star Wars art. You’ll need to be diligent in finding it on the bookstore shelves, though. The drawing sections of most bookstores are usually a bit of a mess and it took me and two sales people to figure out where her book was. But it was worth it!

Trek Tidbits

Struggling with what to do with that dusty box of floppies you still have taking up space? This rather clever person named Andy worked out how to build your own Enterprise using parts from floppies.

StarTrek.com has announced that the upgraded Star Trek episodes will be released on HD-DVD (but will also come with a version playable on lesser DVD players). I’m sure it will be as exhorbitantly priced as every other Trek DVD set.

You can also look forward to the rather hilarious and uncensored Shatner Roast on DVD. Pre-orders are underway.

Heroes Round-Up

Don’t you love the TV Critics Association Week? So many juicy tidbits:

Is Nicki/Jessica comparable to The Incredible Hulk? Producer Tim Kring says so in this article about Ali Larter, the actor who plays Nicki and Jessica.

In the ongoing stampede of Hollywood’s best coming towards the show, Malcom McDowell will be joining the cast.

The rather lovely Santiago Cabrera considers himself very lucky.

Hayden Panettiere and fellow geek Masi Oka also marvel at their own good fortune.

George Takei talks about the challenges of acting in the Japanese language, how he thinks they should give a shout out to Sulu, and SPOILER shares what he knows of his character, so far.

And producer Tim Kring says that we will actually have resolution to this story arc, but will not be able to get away from the inevitable cliffhanger at the end of the season.

And the nominations go to….
