Admiral Daala brings up the rear on Backlash

Relax.StarWars.com has revealed the back cover of Fate of the Jedi: Backlash, featuring an extremely flattering image of the sixtysomething Admiral Daala. Sue says: “She’s now sporting an artificial eye — her left one. She has been taking excellent care of herself over the years.” Or, this is just a cover, can we please stop overthinking it?

Oh, and there’s a blurb:

Repercussions from the dark side’s fatal seduction of Jacen Solo and the mysterious plague of madness afflicting young Jedi continue to wreak havoc galaxy-wide. Having narrowly escaped the deranged Force worshippers known as the Mind Walkers, and a deadly Sith hit squad, Luke and Ben Skywalker are in pursuit of the now Masterless Sith apprentice Vestara Khai. It is a chase that leads to the forbidding planet Dathomir, where an enclave of powerful dark-side Force-wielders will give Vestara the edge she needs to escape — and where the Skywalkers will be forced into combat for their quarry and their lives.

Meanwhile, Han and Leia Solo are on their own desperate mission, shuttling madness-stricken Jedi from Coruscant to safe haven in the Transitory Mists — and beyond the grasp of Galactic Alliance Chief of State Natasi Daala. But the bold maneuver only intensifies Daala’s fury, and she is determined to shatter Jedi Order resistance once and for all.

Yet, no greater threat exists than that which still waits in the depths of the distant Maw Cluster: A being of pure, ravenous dark-side energy named Abeloth calls out across the stars to Jedi and Sith alike. For some, it may be the ultimate source of answers crucial to their survival. For others, it could be the ultimate weapon of conquest. But for all, it is a game-changing — and life-altering — encounter of untold magnitude, and a tactical gambit with unimaginable consequences.

Backlash is the fourth Fate of the Jedi novel and the second by Aaron Allston. It’s due out in March.

The Clone Wars: Intel reports on ‘Senate Spy’

Here’s the latest reviews and reports on ‘Senate Spy’, last week’s episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Tonight, Cartoon Network shows a re-run of ‘Children of the Force’ (only after 4 episodes?). And be sure to check out Club Jade’s own review, this week provided by guest reviewer and Hitchcock fan, Stooge.

  • IGN gives it a 7.7 / 10, liking the show of Padme’s strong will but disappointed at her need to be rescued – again.
  • TheForce.net calls it good but not one of the best, praising Padme’s strength, especially turning Anakin’s lines back at him, but is critical of the confusing political setup of this explosion-free episode.
  • BigShinyRobot gushes over the Notorious homage and praises the solidness of storytelling.
  • SWCloneWarsReviews gives it a 2 out of 5 – more promise than actually delivered, and some plot contrivances that were more puzzling than believable.

Meanwhile over at starwars.com, Pete Vilmur provides an introductory interview with Cary Silver, series producer of The Clone Wars.

As for tonight’s repeat of ‘Children of the Force’, SWUniverse has a list of little nods and winks to watch for.

Gate Geek – Let there be Light

Stargate Universe is back tonight with the episode “Light.”  (As opposed to last week’s episode, “Darkness.”  Seeing a pattern?)

Ratings were down 14%, but it was considered to be okay as it was in competition with baseball and a new horror film.  We’ll see if they’ll still be happy if the ratings are that way this week; although I think there’s more baseball.  Still, November will be critical as Dollhouse will be off the air.  I think they’ll be expected to gather some eyes from that audience.

At any rate, one of the more interesting parts of SGU are the Kino diaries.  The Official Site is now starting to post them.

In other Stargate news, Atlantis won two Gemini Awards.  One for makeup in the episode “Vegas,” and the other for writing in “The Shrine.”  (One of my favorite episodes ever.)  SG1 alum Amanda Tapping’s series Sanctuary won for VFX.

And finally, as reported on our Twitter feed, Jason Momoa will be in HBO’s Game of Thrones series.  (Women everywhere rejoice.  Nude scene!)

The Clone Wars review: ‘Senate Spy’

Senate Spy

As a wise man once said: and now for something completely different.  Just two weeks after I complained that the show had gotten repetitive, I hungrily eat my words.  As the Senate Spy Episode Guide proudly proclaims, “Not a single blaster is fired in this episode, nor is a lightsaber ignited, nor does anything explode.”  Star Wars without ‘spolsions?  Isn’t that like Christmas without eggnog?  Or, um, Hannukah without fried potato skins?
