The fandom minute: Bad fashion, Kanye, audio, and lists

Oh, Kristen Wiig. No. Will it blend? Saturday Night Live’s Kristen Wiig wore a Darth Vader meets Kiss of the Spider Woman dress to the Emmys. Sorry, Bonnie: I’m pretty sure she full deserves that D. But at least we get blog content out of it.

IMMA LET YOU FINISH. Congratulations, it’s a week-old meme in Star Wars form!

Talkies. If you’re in the mood for some old school audio drama, Star Wars en Direct’s Dany Pépin is starting some aural fan fiction, ‘In the Shadows,’ next month.

Lists of dubious (and not-so-dubious) honors. Luke is #1 on Spike’s list of the top ten white trash heroes of cinema, while Lando is one of io9’s ten most corrupt mayors in science fiction. Uh, thanks? I guess. On an entirely different note, A New Hope tops Paste’s ten most iconic opening scenes. (via)

Video: This isn’t the Tonys, Dr. Horrible

Other than Neal Patrick Harris as host, there wasn’t much for genre fans at the Emmys last night – though Dr. Horrible did break in briefly. (I was underwhelmed.) But, good news for fans of a certain tiny psychopath – Michael Emerson took home Best Supporting Actor in a Drama for his turn on Lost.

On a refreshing note, I find this bit to be funnier the second time around. Go fig.

Neil Patrick Harris and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog try to get you to watch the Emmys

Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Ausiello has confirmed that Emmy host Neil Patrick Harris will be part of a Dr. Horrible-themed production” tonight. Horrible picked up a Creative Arts Emmy last week. (If you haven’t seen it by now, we’ll have to revoke your geek card. Sorry.) Also appearing? John Hodgman. This could be the most nerdalicious Emmys ever!

Jediism founder suing supermarket over hood

Man, that Jedi religion guy just can’t stay out of trouble, can he? Daniel Jones, co-founder of the Jedi Church in Wales, is suing a supermarket because they told him to remove his hood.

“It states in our Jedi doctrination that I can wear headwear. It just covers the back of my head,” he said.

“You have a choice of wearing headwear in your home or at work but you have to wear a cover for your head when you are in public.”

Uh-huh. Props to Tesco for their response:

Tesco said: “He hasn’t been banned. Jedis are very welcome to shop in our stores although we would ask them to remove their hoods.

“Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and Luke Skywalker all appeared hoodless without ever going over to the Dark Side and we are only aware of the Emperor as one who never removed his hood.

“If Jedi walk around our stores with their hoods on, they’ll miss lots of special offers.”

Movie news: Sequels, reboots, steampunk, Michael Bay and other things you’re probably sick of

Pretend I photoshopped something POTCy into this.Pirates 4 to go steampunk? Disney gave Johnny Depp a (anti?) hero’s welcome at D23 last week and announced the film’s name – On Stranger Tides – but the most interesting thing I’ve heard in connection with the movie is a rumor that the villian may be cribbing from Captain Nemo. On the one hand that could be kind of cool. On the other hand… It’s Pirates of the Caribbean 4. Not sick of steampunk yet? If there’s any truth to this, you will be.

  • Just like old times. J.J. Abrams and Roberto Orci hint that the next Star Trek movie will deal with “modern-day issues.”
  • It’s never too soon for a reboot! Or a prequel. Yes, X-Men: First Class may be next on the Marvel X-Movie slate. Of course, the Fantastic Four are actually getting a reboot, nevermind that they just made two movies. Nobody runs your iconic properties into the ground like Hollywood!
  • Twilight. New Moon actually has enough of a plot for it to be given away entirely in the trailer? Kristen Stewart actually attempts to act? Dakota Fanning is in it! Wow, my standards are low for this one…
  • Randomly. Nostalgia Chick takes on Armageddon.

Gate Geek – SGU Ready to Launch

There is such an avalanche of Stargate Universe coverage starting that there’s no way to cover it all.  Besides, most of them are spoilery and I’m living partway in the Spoiler Cave, right now.

A nice, spoiler-free review was given by Wired magazine.  Yet another who thinks it’s a strong and interesting show; even for those who have never watched Stargate.

Tons of new content on SyFy and the official site, if you want to be teased further.  SGU starts October 2nd with a 3-parter.
