Trailer park: Carrie, Gatsby, Percy Jackson and… Leatherpants Draco?

In this week’s new trailers, Carrie gets an update with Chloe Moretz and Julienne Moore and I’m not quite sure how to feel about it. Why does no one remake the crappy movies?

Below the cut: Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, New Percy Jackson, and The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.

Sure, it’s not technically a genre film, but Joel Edgerton (young Uncle Owen) is in it and CJers love us some crazy-ass Baz Luhrmann movies.

Not quite sure why there’s another Percy Jackson film, but I’m clearly not the target audience. Still, it looks like the best part of the franchise for us olds will continue to be the Olympian stunt casting: This one features Nathan Fillon as Hermes.

Yup, former fanfic writer and BNF-to-end-all-BNFs Cassie Claire/Clare‘s book is now the latest supernatural YA to try and make it in the big time. SEE the Buffy and Harry Potter influences! MARVEL at how Leatherpants Draco Leatherpants Draco is. WONDER how badly it will flop!

  1. That Carrie trailer is basically the movie. Most trailers are now. Thankfully Star Trek still has mystery about it, so hopefully JJ won’t let Disney cut a trailer that gives all of Episode VII away.

  2. Gatsby is looking better and better with every trailer. Dang – who knew Uncle Owen could be so menancing? Leo looks wonderful as does Carey. Initially I couldn’t picture her as selfish, vain Daisy.

Chloe is almost too normal, too “pretty” to be offcast, weird Carrie. The original really worked IMO because Sissy looks the part, weak, pale, strange. and that’s why the ending was such a shocker – that Carrie was so powerful.

Re: City of Bones – Jamie Campbell Bower is developing a huge following. I was at TIFF in September. We were waiting the arrival of the cast from Anonymous – Jamie is the one who had the girls screaming. This film may not flop at all.

  3. Yeah, I think that’s part of the problem with Carrie. Spacek has an unusual edge to her looks that worked for the part. Mortez is, to quote Mean Girls, too “regulation hottie” for me to buy it. Maybe she’ll convince me, but I still just don’t see why a remake was necessary.

Maybe they’re new fans, because they sure didn’t help that King Arthur show Bower was on. Of course, it was awful. And on Showtime. And he was woefully miscast, at least Not!Draco looks like a better fit. (And he does seem like a pretty personable guy in interviews, so he’s got that going for him.)

So many of the attempts to duplicate the Twilight boom have failed, we’re probably due for one to hit. I remember enough of CC at her fandom height to hope it’s not this, though. A big book fanbase and all-too-obvious derivative elements didn’t exactly help Eragon become a movie franchise. But who can tell?

  4. I can’t wait for the City of Bones movie, I have read all of the books so far.
    And Jamie IS Jace.
