Rest in Peace – Don S. Davis

It is with great sadness that I report that one of the true gentleman of sci-fi passed away yesterday.

Don S. Davis was known to most of us as General Hammond of Stargate SG1, but he also had roles in The X-Files as Scully’s father, the role of Major Briggs in Twin Peaks, and even a few spots in MacGyver that ultimately brought him to the Stargate universe. He was also a talented artist; a passion he decided to indulge in recent years.

Mostly, he was known as a good, kind man who was truly a “Papa Bear” to everyone he encountered; always ready with a hug, a raunchy joke, or to stand up to anyone at a convention who would dare to treat a fan poorly.

I don’t think I will ever forget how emotional he got at Dragon*Con two years ago when he tried to describe what the show and its fans meant to him.

He will be missed.

Instead of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the American Heart Association.

Gate Geek – Dreading over the Dreads?

Yes. It’s been a while. Y’see, there was this trip out to Pegasus. The Apollo developed engine trouble. It was this whole thing….

Okay. Not really. But let’s catch up, shall we?

Not to be outdone by a show that’s still on the air, the SG1 news:

Do Good of the Week – More auction fun!

This week’s geeky auction fun is brought to you by the Waterkeeper Alliance. Apparently there are a lot of celebrities who are supporting it, so dig on into it to see who’s offering. (Some mighty cool vacation opportunities, as well!)

Of geek interest:

How did they score so much geek cred? One of the organization’s biggest supporters is Richard Dean Anderson. He MacGyvered them into it, I’m sure.

Thanks to James and The Browncoats for the heads up!

Gate Geek – New Gates, New Worlds

Our first inkling of the premise behind the upcoming third Stargate series!  Brad Wright told GateWorld that it’s set on an Ancient’s ship that was sent out to seed new gates.  And yes, it uses the ninth chevron.

In the meantime, they’re going back to rework the SG1 Pilot.  Not one of SG1’s better offerings, the hope is to not only improve the special effects, but to fix some of the story and scoring issues.  (Did they learn nothing from the Special Editions?)

Something that probably won’t have issues is Continuum.  The second straight-to-DVD movie (which had its cast and crew viewing this weekend) will be released July 29th!

Gate Geek – Well, that was a long trip

So Stargate Atlantis Season 4 wrapped up in the US with The Last Man. So how long a stretch are we expecting before we get new stuff?

According to Alex Levine, it might just be this summer. And according to the promo for the SuperFan contest, it’s July. So yay!

There’s also a great interview with David Hewlett to enjoy. (Thanks to Scary for the tip.)

In the meantime, we have a SG-1 adventure to extend the new Stargate love for at least another week. And, if all goes well with their pilot, we’ll have a new series from Michael Shanks and Christopher Judge which you know will just become an extension of the Stargate family.

Still. That’s a long time to wait….

Gate Geek – Indeed

Well, things are lookin’ mighty interesting going into the season finale for Atlantis.  As usual, there are more tidbits to watch on the sneak preview on the official site.

However, we can live through our inter-season despair, safe in the knowledge that the next season is underway; as evidenced by the traditional cast dinner in which Joe Mallozzi moved too slow in keeping his dessert away from Jason Momoa.  (Would you argue with Jason?)

In SG1 news, they are really flooding the internet with wondrous tidbits to enjoy; including all sorts of new videos and the chance to ask producer Robert Cooper those burning questions you’ve always wanted answered.

Don’t want to send a message there?  They’ve added another cool “messaging” system using Ark of Truth clips.

Gate Geek – The Big Finish

Nope.  I’m not talking about the end of SGA Season 5 (although aren’t you dying to find out how it all comes together?), but Michelle points out that the company Big Finish has moved forward with selling their “talking books” for SG1 and SGA.

There is a clip available on the SG1 page to give you an idea of the production value for these things.  I must say, I’m impressed.  They’re less audio book and more radio production, without the large cast.  (I’d link you to it, but their servers seem a bit overwhelmed, today.)

Gate Geek – The Excitement Builds (Indeed)

So which way do we go this week?  Excitement that Atlantis is rocketing towards the end of what has proven to be a rockin’ season?  Or excitement that SG1 is about to rejoin us with all sorts of movie goodness?

SG1 – Rockin’ the Ark

March 11th will soon be here.  Can you believe it?!  Well, MGM certainly can by releasing another teaser video with some wonderfully breath-taking shots in it.   This one’s going to be of the pretty, folks!

Atlantis – Oh, The Tension!

Okay.  Kindred, Part I.  Although rather rudely spoiled by SciFi in their promo (yes, you kinda figured, but did they really have to do it?), this episode finally started rocketing us towards the resolution of every hanging storyline out there.

Joe Mallozzi took the lead on this one and shared what he was thinking and some deleted/alternate scenes.

If you want the answer to one of the questions posed in Part I, check out this week’s teaser video on the official site.

Gate Geeks – We have DVDs!

Just in time for my birthday, the upcoming SG1 movie The Ark of Truth will be released direct-to-DVD on March 11th.

The week before, the US will finally get its own chance to buy Stargate’s version of The Star Wars Holiday Special when Stargate Infinity: The Legend Begins is released on March 6th. (Although really, it would take a lot to be as bad as The Holiday Special!)

In other Stargate news:
Joe Mallozzi advises us to spread the wealth in our praises and criticisms of each week’s show. Plus, he announced that he will be breaking down this week’s mid-season finale and fielding questions in his blog.
– The Chucknician himself, Chuck Campbell, talks about the joys of being a day player for Stargate.
– And Stargate’s own Head Fan Pierre Bernard (from Conan O’Brien’s Recliner of Rage bit) throws out a press release for one last push on the People’s Choice Awards voting. (Which still has a few categories open.)

Gate Geek – The Catch-Up Version

What have we missed while my internet access has been down? A few tidbits, here and there:

– All sorts of hardly-spoilery photos from the upcoming SG1 movie The Ark of Truth.
– Info of a definitely-more spoilery nature about this Friday’s mid-season finale of Stargate Atlantis. GateWorld finds more story details. The Official Site puts up new video that gives a bit more away than SciFi’s preview.
– We also have a new interview with Amanda Tapping on the joys of Rodney McKay.
– And there’s still one more day left to support Atlantis in the People’s Choice voting.
