Michael Kenneth Williams cut from Han Solo film due to scheduling issues

Michael Kenneth Williams is out of the Han Solo film due to scheduling issues with reshoots, he tells Deadline today.

“When Ron Howard got hired to finish out the film, there were some reshoot issues that needed to be done in regards to my character, in order for it to match the new direction which the producers wanted Ron to carry the film in,” Williams told Deadline. “And that would have required me on a plane a month ago to London, to Pinewood, to do reshoots. But I’m here, on location in Africa. It’s scheduling.”

He said his role was a half-human, half-animal and “a kick-ass character.” He told Vanity Fair that his character was a link between Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) and Emilia Clarke, whose character name is Kira (or Kura, per Making Star Wars.)

Ron Howard tweets pic of Chewbacca on set

Another Twitter snap by new Hanthlogy director Ron Howard shows us Chewbacca – and a brief, fuzzy look at two Wookiees having a moment. Will we be seeing Chewie’s family on screen, for the first time since the Holiday Special? Or, given that Chewbacca himself is behind the camera, two new Wookiees entirely?

Chewbacca’s wife, Malla, and son, Lumpawaroo, both appeared in the Aftermath books, making them canon again. We’ve also seen, most notably in Rebels, that the concept of the Empire enslaving Wookiees for labor was also maintained. That was a major part of the Han and Chewbacca backstory in the noncanon Legends timeline (introduced in Brian Daley’s Han Solo novels), and could possibly be revisited in the film.
