Today in The Last Jedi: New photos, Storms of Crait preview

In Time, Kelly Marie Tran and Laura Dern talk representation, plus an anecdote from Dern on Silent Running. (It starred her father and the robots in it are one of the inspirations for Artoo. )

Newsarama has the Storms of Crait #1 preview pages. The comic is set during the original trilogy and will give some background on the planet we’ll see in the movie. (Crait also appeared in the Claudia Gray novel Leia: Princess of Alderaan.)

Today in The Last Jedi: Who’s ready to jump in an X-wing and blow stuff up?

New footage spotted! A brief look at Kelly Marie Tran’s Rose Tico in action is a highlight of a spot for EDF Energy (okay…), while General Organa and Poe have a great exchange in a new commercial. (Another recent spot features new Finn footage!)

There’s also a great profile of Tran at Buzzfeed which is definitely worth a read. She talks about her background, Harry Potter, and Carrie Fisher in the gym. She teases that Rose has “has an interesting relationship with war.” She’s also one of The Hollywood Reporter’s Next Gen Talent picks.

There were also two big image reveals today: A new picture of Laura Dern as Amilyn Holdo came as part of a quick profile in Elle, and the IMAX poster in USA Today.

Glover, Ahmed and Dern win Emmys

Three Star Wars actors won big at the Emmys tonight. The upcoming Han Solo film’s Donald Glover took home two statues for Atlanta – lead actor in a comedy and directing in a comedy. Rogue One’s Riz Ahmed won as lead in a limited series for The Night of. And The Last Jedi’s Laura Dern took supporting actress in a limited series for Big Little Lies.

The night’s biggest genre winner was The Handmaid’s Tale. The dystopia won Best Drama Series and writing, along with lead and supporting wins for Elizabeth Moss and Ann Dowd. Anthology series Black Mirror also took two trophies for the episode “San Junipero.”

So many photos! The Vanity Fair spread is live

Vanity Fair’s full spread and story is up! You need to go check it out, but here’s a quick rundown what we’ve learned: Laura Dern is Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo of the Resistance, and Benicio Del Toro doesn’t get a name at all in the film – though they’re calling him DJ. (Seeeecretsss.) And yes, there are pictures of both. Kelly Marie Tran’s Rose Tico has a sister, Paige, a Resistance gunner, played by Veronica Ngo. And the planet filmed in Dubrovnik is indeed named Canto Bright. “I was thinking, O.K., let’s go ultra-glamour. Let’s create a playground, basically, for rich assholes,” director Rian Johnson said.

The article also includes some touching tributes to (and photos of) Carrie Fisher, so keep the tissues handy.

Writer David Kamp will be answering questions about the story on Reddit later today.

May the 4th roundup: Mark, Rian and Doctor Aphra

May the 4th is rarely a big day for anything but goofiness, and we did get that in spades. Below, Kristen Bell (guest hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live) surprised Adam Scott with Mark Hamill.

→ In addition to giving a few quotes to Entertainment Weekly, The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson did share a quick video with another Star Wars luminary:

→ Meanwhile, Han Solo director Philip Lord teases something he can’t talk about just yet.

Marvel’s Doctor Aphra won the latest Hasbro fan figure poll. Expect a 3.75-inch action figure, the character’s first, sometime next year.

→ Also: Laura Dern still isn’t saying much, Star Wars character popularity by state, Padme’s outfits ranked, and a Force playlist.

→ And no, we didn’t get a new Vanity Fair spread, as many of us were assuming. But do expect one later this month. Let’s just not pin it on any specific dates this time.

Rumors: Snoke’s wardrobe and more on Laura Dern in The Last Jedi

Here’s the latest pair of The Last Jedi rumors from Making Star Wars. In the first, we learn all about what Snoke’s wearing and where he’s living, which seems like… Not what you’d expect. (Or is it?) In the second, more on Laura Dern’s character and the Resistance.

As always, remember: None of this is guaranteed, and could be spoilery! (The pic above isn’t a spoiler – it’s from The Art of The Force Awakens, and thus more than fair game at this point.)

The Last Jedi rumor (and news) roundup: Phasma, walkers and planets, oh my!

Time to catch up with all The Last Jedi rumors that have been flying about recently. Our first batch is from Making Star Wars, which hints at Captain Phasma’s new weapon (check out a fan art interpretation) and a new form of walker. Plus, Jason Ward is tweeting about the look of things in general: “The Last Jedi looks like the Star Wars prequels took “Game of Thrones” on a date and they had a baby.” This does fit with several things we saw out and about throughout the filming, both in Dubrovnik and the U.K.

Meanwhile, Star Wars News Net is reporting about several classic planets making a return in VIII and beyond, as well as how they may tie into the plot. As usual, I recommend reading this with a healthy dose of skepticism, but there are some intriguing things there.

→ Marvel is plotting something for November. WHATEVER COULD IT BE? (Does Threepio get another new arm? Another set of parents for Poe? Stay tuned.)

→ There’s also something going around about a guy from some British pop group having a cameo. Spoiler: It’s Gary Barlow, who also apparently hosts a talent show on the BBC. He’s older than me so it’s not a N’SYNC situation, at least.

→ In officially-sanctioned vagueness, there’s Laura Dern talking about how she can’t even tell her kids who she’s playing.
