SDCC: Jason Fry is writing the The Last Jedi novelization, and other fiction news

A whole heap of Star Wars book news has come out of San Diego Comic-Con, some expected, some not. (This is all in addition to what we heard the other day!) Most are, naturally, tie-ins to The Last Jedi. We learned that longtime Star Wars writer Jason Fry is writing the Del Rey novelization of the film. Franchise newcomer Elizabeth Wein is writing Cobalt Squadron, “the harrowing story of the courageous bomber pilots and technicians of Cobalt Squadron.” The novel for young readers will feature Rose and Paige Tico.

First look at the Captain Phasma comic mini

One of the few plotty Journey to The Last Jedi tie-ins that we know about, Marvel’s Captain Phasma comic, released a few preview pages today. They’re textless, but isn’t that always how it goes? The mini is written by Kelly Thompson and illustrated by Marco Checchetto (Who also did most of Shattered Empire, the mini which had a similar spot during Journey to The Force Awakens.)

The comic will begin in September, which also sees the release of Deliah S. Dawson’s novel Phasma, which will cover (at least) some of the character’s backstory.

In other comic news, IDW Publishing has revealed the creative teams for their all-ages Star Wars Adventures series. Here’s hoping these breed some top-quality humor, because I still miss Dark Horse’s Star Wars Tales.

Captain Phasma to star in Journey to The Last Jedi; Claudia Gray is back with a young Leia book

…Or so it seems, anyway. We’re getting a novel from Deliah S. Dawson and Del Rey, Phasma, as well as a Marvel mini-series about the character. From Disney Lucasfilm Press, a young Leia novel from Claudia Gray, and The Legends of Luke Skywalker by Ken Liu. He wrote a bit about his experience with the franchise.

Del Rey’s Saturday panel was not much for news, but we did learn that the Phasma book is a backstory of some sort. Meanwhile, Christie Golden’s Inferno Squadron is a Battlefront II prequel novel.
