New Star Wars costume exhibit coming to Seattle

padme-costume-cropRebel, Jedi, Princess, Queen: Star Wars and the Power of Costume will feature “60 hand-crafted costumes” from the first six films. It’s a collaboration between Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, with consultation from Lucasfilm.

Although I initially thought this would debut in D.C., another Club Jader, Nancy, noted that the exhibit is already being teased by the Experience Music Project Museum in Seattle for a January 2015 opening.

After Seattle, the exhibit will go onto 11 other cities, as yet unnamed. One will almost certainly be Chicago, when the Lucas Museum is ready.

Costumes have always been a major feature of past Star Wars exhibits, but this may be the first to focus on them exclusively. Star Wars: The Magic of Myth, which ran at the at the National Air and Space Museum from fall 1997 to early 1999, is a quite important part of Club Jade’s own history, as the reason behind our first large-scale meetup. Since then, we’ve also seen Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination, and the still-touring Star Wars Identities, which opens in France next month.

  1. I saw Identities when I was in Paris in August. Is it opening somewhere else in France?

I love Star Wars exhibits. I went to Boston by myself to see When Science Meets Imagination (and, you know, other things in Boston) and thus learned that I can totally do this travelling on my own thing. I’ll definitely go see this, too.

    1. Lyon.

I’ll probably go to D.C. if CJ or we have a fansite/Twitter gathering. If not, wait for Chicago? All depends on the dates.

      1. The last time I was in DC was in 1998 (for Magic of Myth, as it happens), and this is the perfect excuse to plan a return trip. Or Chicago works, too. Like you said, see what the dates are and then see how I can wrangle my vacation time.

        1. If it ever comes to D.C., since we now know it starts in Seattle. But it’ll be a while before it makes it to Chicago, as I doubt the Lucas Museum will be ready to be stop #2 in 2016.

          1. Well, boohiss. I’ve never been to Seattle and I’d love to plan a trip around this exhibit, but next year’s vacation time has already been claimed by Celebration and handbell things. I’ll catch it in Chicago or somewhere else.
