New Bloodline blurb sheds more light on the New Republic

Jedi Bibliothek spotted a new summary for Claudia Gray’s Bloodline in the Amazon preview of the Aftermath paperback. It reveals the situation within the New Republic Senate, as well as where the “First Senator” position falls in.

An entire generation has flourished during an era of peace. The New Republic, governed by the Galactic Senate on Hosnian Prime, has held power for more than two decades. The wars that divided the galaxy are fading into legend.

Yet conflict has begun to take shape within the Senate. Two unofficial but powerful factions have formed – the Populists, who believe individual planets should retain almost all authority, and the Centrists, who favor a stronger galactic government and a more powerful military.

As this political gridlock threatens to cripple the fledgling democracy, Centrist leaders have called for the election of a “First Senator.” It is their hope that this powerful position will bring order to the divided Senate. But populists like Senator Leia Organa Solo know all too well the price of such order. Even as the election nears, the divisions between the worlds of the galaxy are growing wider…

It really does say ‘Leia Organa Solo,’ a form of her name we haven’t seen since the old Expanded Universe was decanonized. Typo or revival? (I vote typo.) The blurb is followed by the same excerpt we say with the book’s cover reveal last month.

UPDATE: Del Rey has also put out a new poster today, which may or may not support the Vader hypothesis from the other day.

Bloodline will be out in hardcover and eBook on May 3.

  1. Leia Organa Solo for the win! People, Pablo Hidalgo said it again in the latest Rebels Recon…Legends material can still be used in the new canon! Expect to see more and more of it brought over.

    1. They can, but she’s just Leia Organa in TFA. And note that none of the TFA material references a legal dissolution of marriage – Han and Leia referred to as ‘wife’ and ‘husband,’ even though they’ve clearly been (informally?) separated.

A blurb isn’t much to go on for this, which is why I hesitate. It may just be that someone at Del Rey forgot/was unaware of the new style.

      1. You know, it could just be that at this point in time (in Bloodlines) Leia hasn’t decided to drop the Solo name yet. We’ll know more in May.

        1. Yep, I was going to say, possibly by TFA, that’s just part of ‘going back to what [we’re] good at.’ She was good at being Leia Organa, Rebel Leader. She have found Leia Organa Solo, Republic politician, not as easy. Once her son…does his thing…she might have been trying to go back in many ways.

  2. Interesting that Leia is in the “Populist” camp since she disagreed with the Republic’s Military Disarmament Act and was branded a “warmonger” for forming the unauthorized private military Resistance to watchdog and fight the First Order.

From Wookieepedia – “As what was left of the Empire transformed into the First Order, Leia continued to be the leading voice for rearmament of the Republic—an unpopular political stance that soured her previously pristine reputation. Many in the new Senate accused Organa of being an alarmist or warmonger and sidelined the princess from the political processes of the democracy she had helped found.”

    1. It sounds like they’re using “populist” in a way that doesn’t really track with what it means in real-world terms. They’re using it to mean what sounds like a watered-down version of Separatists and maybe as a less-real-world-charged version of “anti-Federalist”. Which is more what it seems they really are–favoring a decentralized government with more “state” (in the nation, ie planetary/planetary system sense) control while the Centrists want the old-school Republic centralized control. Under a GFFA Anti-Federalist system, planets would presumably be able to develop their own defensive forces, band with regional systems, and contribute to a common defense when necessary. The Centrists think if everyone joins a mass galactic government and theoretically has a voice, no one NEEDS a military and arming up would just provoke disaffected remnants, so one centrally-controlled fleet on a small scale will be fine. (In TFA, we see that works about as well as voting the Chancellor emergency powers did fifty years prior.)
