Jonathan Rhys Meyers in talks for Episode VII?

Jonathan Rhys Meyers in Dracula

Latino Review’s El Mayimbe says that sources are telling him that Jonathan Rhys Meyers of The Tudors fame is in talks for a role in Episode VII.

FRYSQUINT: SEQUEL TRILOGY RUMORS: Take seriously at your own risk.Meyers is best known for playing Henry VIII in the Showtime series, but if you’re a big Ewan McGregor fan you’ll no doubt recall his turn in Velvet Goldmine. Perhaps more tellingly: He was in the J.J. Abrams-directed Mission Impossible: III. His next major role is as the title character in NBC’s Dracula.

I think it says something that my first thought upon seeing ‘Tudors star’ in the headline was less Meyers and more Natalie Dormer, who’s been knocking it out of the park lately on Game of Thrones and Elementary. (And would thus probably be past being billed as just a ‘Tudors’ star, but hey: Gut feeling. Her Anne Boelyn was the best part of the series.)

I can’t help but hope this one ends up being only a rumor, but Meyers would make a decent villain, I suppose. With all that shouty petulance in his wheelhouse, I can certainly see him playing a failbot Sith/Darksider ala the late Jacen Solo.

  1. I think I’d be OK with Rhys Meyers in Star Wars. Although the idea of him playing pseudo!Jacen really squicks me out. Didn’t watch Tudors, but I like Natalie Dormer on Game of Thrones. I’d be really into the idea of her in Star Wars.

    1. I think part of the reason I get a kick of of him as Jacen is that fancasting always goes for these really boringly ‘hunky’ actors like those dudes from Supernatural.

On the other hand, we now live in a world where a lot of people consider Benedict Cumberbatch handsome, so what do I know?

  2. I mean, if they’re going to actually, for realz, cast a Jacen, I think Rhys Meyers could be a great fit. It’s more the idea of a whiny-Sith-Jacen in the movies that irks, since still find the LOTF storyline just… anathema.

    1. Oh, I think the chances of him being any Jacen – or Jacen even being in the movies – are pretty slim. I’m just saying that type of character is what I’d expect him to play, given that’s mostly what we see him play.

  3. I’ve been working on a fanfic for over two years where I picture one main villain as JR-M, so I think he’d fit well ;-P And while I in principal think it’s annoying to reprise TV-series castings, I’d give thumbs up for Dormer too.

  4. He’s about the right age and look for Jagged Fel. Who will play Jaina Solo Fel?

    1. Let’s keep the fancasting to a minimum and focus on the actor at hand: No Jainas.

I can’t see him as Jag. Jag would be one of those super-boring CW dudes. Let us not forget where fandom adapted the Commander Cardboard nickname from. ;)
