Pictures from the Her Universe Geek Couture Fashion Show. Popsugar has clear looks t most of the fashions from last night’s show at SDCC.
Our very own JJ – JawaJames – is at San Diego Comic-Con, and he’s now shared his pictures from Thursday, including the con floor, the Rebels panel, and a few things pre-screening. Amy Ratcliffe had a few thoughts on the screening for IGN, but all I’m seeing on Twitter this morning is praise – even from folks who couldn’t get into The Clone Wars.
Also last night was the Her Universe fashion show – of course, it happened at the same time as the Rebels panel. Tricia collected some tweets and things, and here’s our own Caitlin in her Padme dress. The winners were the ladies of the Back to the Future and Once Upon a Time dresses. And the new Her Universe licensee is Studio Ghibli, which I admit I never would have guessed. A Totoro dress is coming. I expect we’ll hear more today.
The big ticket for Star Wars today – for our purposes, anyway – is the Del Rey book panel (2 p.m. PDT, 5 p.m. EDT) but Hasbro is up at noon PDT/3:00 EDT so there’ll be a lot of toy news coming up as well.
Her Universe rolls out new Transformers line. Four shirts, two dresses and a pair of leggings.
And the second new Her Universe licensee is… Transformers? Looks like we’ll get a closer look on Thursday. Does this one excite you at all? Because I feel a resounding sense of ‘meh.’
Her Universe has announced the first wave of their new Marvel line! There’s more coming, including a Loki dress, Ashley Eckstein tells The Daily Dot. A Black Widow hoodie will be available at San Diego Comic Con. And Ashley herself will be voicing Dagger of Cloak and Dagger in the animated Ultimate Spider-Man.
The line is also part of Marvel’s own “Characters and Creators” initiative, which is targeting women and girls. (The new Ms. Marvel is an earlier example.)
Her Universe hints at Marvel license. A few items have already slipped out, but it looks like we can expect an announcement next week.
We know that Her Universe is expecting to announce several new liscensees, and if this Captain America shirt (prematurely?) available for order on ThinkGeek is any indication, Marvel is indeed one of them. Unless Ashley is suddenly modeling other lines… (Via @Shadadukal)
Currently, there are no plans for Leia products at Disney Store, Natalie. Have a wonderful day!
No so shocking, really, given the current climate. (Not to mention that the ‘have a wonderful day!’ is delightfully discordant here. How very, Disney.) They do later offer to follow up with Natalie. Perhaps they noticed the response? I first saw this on The Mary Sue, and today it’s on Jezebel. Hello, mainstream!
Given the reports from Star Wars Weekends that Her Universe stuff was selling like hotcakes down in Orlando, is it really such of a stretch for the Disney Store to dream up some Leia merchandise? As Jezebel points out, Disney is more than aware of the demand for Frozen stuff – why can’t they imagine that people may want Leia dolls, Padme dolls (dear lord, you could found an American Girl-style empire on that woman’s wardrobe alone) or even a few t-shirts?
Hell, turn some of that in-house Princess expertise to a Star Wars test run, or simply partner with Her Universe to get a few exclusive tees and dresses, bags and necklaces in stores across the country, and count your money.
Yes, Star Wars is a brand that is seen as being primarily “for boys.” But that doesn’t mean girls don’t like it. (Hello!) That doesn’t mean that girls obsessed with Elsa (or their parents and grandparents) won’t pick up a Leia shirt, an Ahsoka lightsaber, a Queen Amidala dress while they’re in your stores. This is not a zero-sum game: Crossing the aisle of the tired boy-franchise/girl-franchise gender binary means you get more money. What’s so hard to understand about that?
UPDATE: Steve Sansweet has an entry on the official blog about the Disney Store Star Wars offerings. Several comments are already addressing this issue, but if you feel the need to join them, please BE NICE. After all, Steve and the StarWars.com team are not at fault here.
