Rumor: Ewan McGregor signed on for Obi-Wan project

One of the most persistent Star Wars rumors since Disney bought Lucasfilm has been the return of live-action Obi-Wan. Today, Cinelinx sources report that Ewan McGregor has signed on to reprise the role in what looks to be a Disney+ series.

Given the fandom’s evergreen thirst for Obi-Wan, and Disney+’s willingness to get film stars to reprise their roles for streaming – see Rogue One’s Diego Luna and Alan Tudyk, or many Marvel stars – this is quite plausible.

UPDATE: Now Fantha Tracks is weighing in with a number of additional details: McGregor will direct several of the 8 episodes, and have “a a familiar mechanical co-star.”

UPDATE #2: Giving this rumor a lot more weight, trades Variety, The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline are also reporting it, via their own sources. Reports from the Hollywood trades rank only a smidge below official confirmation, and as we’ve seen many times before, several of them having it independently is a very, very good sign.

D23 is just over a week away, and while we know for sure The Mandalorian will be the star, but the timing here is pretty interesting. The Disney+ panel at D23 Expo is Friday, August 23 at 3:30 p.m. Pacific.

Star Wars Resistance returns for a second – and final – season in October

Star Wars Resistance will end with its second season, Lucasfilm announced today as they dropped the new trailer. It will premiere Sunday, October 6 at 10:30 p.m. on the Disney Channel.

The new season will take place during The Last Jedi as we lead up to The Rise of Skywalker. Joining the cast as guest roles are Joe Manganiello (Magic Mike) as Ax Tagrin, Daveed Diggs (Hamilton) as Norath Kev, and Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess) as the Aeosian Queen. And sorry, Adam Driver fans – Skywalker Sound vet Matthew Wood (The Clone Wars) will be voicing Kylo Ren.

The story picks up after a harrowing escape from the First Order, as the Colossus and all its residents find themselves lost in space, pursued by Agent Tierny and Commander Pyre. Kaz and team also face a myriad of new dangers along the way including bounty hunters, a suspicious Hutt, General Hux and Supreme Leader Kylo Ren. Meanwhile, Tam grapples with her future and where her true allegiance lies, with her friends or the First Order. The thrilling final season will showcase how the unlikeliest of heroes can help spark hope across the galaxy.

New Star Wars kids cartoon BB-8s the GFFA

Star Wars Kids is cycling to another series, with Star Wars Roll Out, which transforms all sorts of characters into BB-8s. (Well, not the porgs. Porgs are eternally porg-shaped, it seems.)

From director Hideo Itoyanagi, the first episode will drop on Friday, August 9. Here’s the teaser:

No word on if this means Galaxy of Adventures has run its course. As for who that small vested character is… Well, “it’s not Poe.”

You can buy Resistance S1 next month – but only on DVD

Is it the end of the line for cartoon Blu-Rays? Resistance season 1 is being released on August 20 – but only on DVD, instead of both Blu-ray and DVD like the past cartoon releases. Presumably this means the adult audience has chosen to purchase digitally – or the looming launch of Disney+ is expected to take up the slack.

Resistance nabs an Emmy nomination

Star Wars Resistance is up for an Emmy in the category of Outstanding Children’s Program. It’s up against A Series Of Unfortunate Events, Carmen Sandiego, Song Of Parkland and When You Wish Upon A Pickle: A Sesame Street Special. Rebels was nominated in the same category in 2017 and 2018.

Star Wars alumni up for Emmys this year include Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Actress in a Comedy and Writing for Fleabag; Drama Writing for Killing Eve, plus both shows are up for Outstanding Series in their respective categories), Emilia Clarke (Lead Actress in a Drama for Game of Thrones), Gwendoline Christie (Supporting Actress in a Drama, also Game of Thrones), and Benicio Del Toro (Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series for Escape At Dannemora.)

The Emmys are given out on September 22.

Jon Favreau already writing The Mandalorian S2

Sounds like The Mandalorian is getting a second season – Jon Favreau tells Jimmy Kimmel that he’s already begun writing it.

A second season of the show is hardly a surprise – after The Rise of Skywalker, the franchise won’t have any new movies until 2022, so the Disney+ series will likely be the franchise’s most high-profile new content for a time.

Meanwhile, a report says that one of the first season’s directors, Rick Famuyiwa, is in talks to direct episodes of Disney+’s second Star Wars series, which focuses on Rogue One’s Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and K-2SO (Alan Tudyk). They say he’s also attached to direct episodes of The Mandalorian‘s second season as well.

S1 of The Mandalorian will debut with Disney+ in November; The Cassian series is expected to begin shooting in the fall.

The Mandalorian gets a D23 spotlight in August

The Mandalorian is going to D23 – it will be part of the Disney+ presentation on Friday, August 23, with Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni. Lucasfilm will have a pavilion on the con floor, bringing at least a part of their SDCC trooper display.

What this means, basically: 10-20 minutes in the midst of a giant panel (it’ll be all the Disney+ stuff in one) and maybe they’ll release a trailer. It’s a big maybe, given they released none of the footage that was shown at the Celebration panel.

D23 Expo is being held at the Anaheim Convention Center from August 23-25. The first episode of The Mandalorian will launch with Disney+ on November 12.

Bob Iger: 2022’s Star Wars film is from Benioff and Weiss, third live-action TV show possible

As we suspected, the post-hiatus Star Wars films will be kicked off with something from Game of Thrones‘ David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, Bob Iger confirmed today. So now we know they’re handling at least the 2022 film, and… That’s about it. “…the next movie we release will be theirs,” the Disney CEO said at the MoffettNathanson Media & Communications Summit. “We’re not saying anything more about that.”

As for TV, Iger also said that there’s likely to be at least one more Star Wars series for Disney+, in addition to Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian (out in November) and Stephen Schiff’s Cassian Andor/K-2SO series (expected for 2020).

“My guess is there probably will be at least one more live-action series that we produce for Disney+, a Star Wars series, before we release the next film,” Iger said. “So we’re not doing nothing. I believe these TV series will be extremely popular for Star Wars fans and very very valuable to Disney+ while we gear up for the next set of films. We haven’t said anything more beyond what we’ve announced on the next film.”

As for the three-year hiatus following The Rise of Skywalker, it is in part to “figure out what’s next.”

“We’re hard at work doing that already,” he said. “Three years was the proper amount of time to not only take a breather and reset, but really gear up for the next film’s release.”

Maybe get some fresher voices in there? While I remain mildly intrigued with the concept of the Cassian show, The Mandalorian looks straight out of Dark Horse’s ’90s comic offerings, and the final season of Game of Thrones is not exactly out there covering itself in glory. I realize there’s a lot of gaps here (Rian Johnson, buddy?) and it’s still early, but I am not particularly optimistic about the state of on-screen Star Wars right now.

But hey, at least we’re getting Episode IX. Vanity Fair and Annie Leibovitz, we turn our weary eyes to you.
