Gate Geek – The Endings and The Beginnings

David Hewlett (Rodney McKay) is fairly convinced that the lack of contact with the show’s producers means there will be no Atlantis movie.  And it makes him sad.

But the newbies to the franchise are enjoying the hype that comes with a new (and still supported) show at the Television Critics Association:

  • The ladies get caught doing Wookiee impressions (two e’s people…geez)
  • David Blue outs himself…as a geek (no surprise to anyone following his Tweets) and Lou Diamond Phillips scores the biggest laugh of the panel in this summary.
  • And the producers try changing tacks from the earliest marketing disaster to saying they’re trying to “broaden” the Stargate appeal.

Gate Geek – Universe Premiere and Other Tidbits

Gate Geek – It’s a New Wave Universe

There’s a building tidal wave of hype for Stargate Universe.

There’ll be a new trailer aired with the premiere of Warehouse13 on SciFi SyFY.  But those lovely, sneaky folks at GateWorld already have it.  (It looks great! Um.  Sorry.)  Plus, the first official episode picture.  It’s akin to the sonogram, I suppose?

In addition, we know that the cast will be making their official debut at ComicCon on Friday.  (Cruel choice for those who are also Star Wars fans.  Thankfully my dislike of crowds keeps me from being put into that position.)

And just what is the official site doing behind that “under construction” sign?

Gate Geek – I see interesting things

I really need to do these more often.  Lots of news flying, these days.

Prepare to be astounded.  Stargate Universe is going to feature an openly gay character for the first time; in addition to being “dark and edgy.”  (The cast does not appear to be as dark and edgy, though.  If you’re not already following them, cast members David Blue and Brian Jacob Smith have been Twittering up a storm and seem like a lot of fun.)

So this gay thing is not entirely new.  It has already been said that at least one of the Atlantis characters was gay, but they never put it on screen.  And there may be others.

Maybe they’ll do that in the “some day soon” version of the Atlantis movie?  (Joe Mallozzi has been working on the script.)  But apparently MGM is being a bit wishy-washy about the timing for this and the next SG1 project.

In spend-some-money news, there is a preview of the Teal’c animated maquette on i09 that is entirely too cute.  (Words rarely associated with Teal’c.)

You can also spend your money to have lunch with Richard Dean Anderson to benefit the Waterkeeper Alliance.

And in yet still unrelated news, big, um, congrats to the incredibly talented Christopher Hyerdahl for being cast in the next Twilight movie.  May you not be overrun by Twihards.

Gate Geek – Teaser with Much Emotion

The second Stargate Universe teaser aired on Friday.  Very heavy on the drama and emotion.  Even though this is a “grittier” show, they’d best show some humor soon or the fan base will get even grouchier than they already are.

Over on GateWorld, coverage of the Friday events at the Vancouver convention is up.

And I should probably hand this over to Dunc for her ongoing series on fandom cakes, but it was too cute for me to pass up:  Stargate cakes! (via)

Gate Geek – Jack’s Back!

This week is the biggest Stargate convention of the year:  Creation’s Stargate con in Vancouver.  So it stands to reason we’ll be getting lots of fun tidbits via GateWorld.

Best of all is the news from producer Brad Wright that Jack (Richard Dean Anderson) will be appearing in Stargate Universe!

Gary Jones has also confirmed that everyone’s favorite Chevron-counter, Walter, will be appearing.

And rumors (totally con-based rumors…and you know how those get) are swirling that Michael Shanks (Daniel Jackson) and Amanda Tapping (Sam Carter) are also appearing because they suddenly had to push back their appearance at the con for filming.  (Probably have to nix at least Amanda on that one.  Sanctuary is currently in production.  And Michael is doing a pilot.  But I’ll take it, if it’s true!)

Either way, you can catch all of these folks tonight (Friday) on Sci-Fi SyFy as Stargate takes over this Friday with airings of The Ark of Truth and Continuum.  (If you haven’t seen Continuum, watch.  It’s a really good one!)

Gate Geek – Newsbits

Well, look who’s been a bit lazy!  So what’s been happening around the Gate, lately?

Gate Geek – All the single ladies….

(via) Finally…we find out about the ladies of Stargate Universe (and another guy, for good measure).  Universe started production last week, so it’s nice to get this clarified.  Michael Ausiello and the Hollywood Reporter got the exclusive announcement rights (even before the MGM website).

And the ladies are:

  • Ming-Na – Formerly of ER fame and now playing Camille Wray, “an HR bigwig and highest ranking survivor.”
  • Elyse Levesque – Best known to genre fans for her work on Smallville and playing, “Chloe Armstrong, the wild and immature daughter of a U.S. Senator.”
  • Alaina Huffman (who has another name on IMDB) – Another Smallville alum who will be playing MSgt. Tamara Johansen, a field medic assigned to treat the seriously wounded.  (Given Stargate’s history, this does not bode well for her ultimate survival, but we can only wish her the best.)

A bit of a surprise announcement (to me, at least) is Lou Diamond Phillips (La Bamba) who has joined the cast as Col. Telford, “a lifelong military man and the chosen leader of the ill-fated expedition.”  (Confused.  I thought that was Robert Carlyle‘s role?  Is Telford not long for the Universe?  Or am I perpetually confused?)

Either way, I’m liking how this cast is shaping up.  Here’s hoping they pull off a good show!

Gate Geek – Stargate Universe launches production

Stargate Universe has, at long last, started production.   However, we still don’t have a clue which actors were cast in the female roles; even though they’re at the studio, right now.  (Can someone go over and look?)

How delaying the announcement of the full cast helps with publicity?  Not a clue.

And speaking of Stargate women, the auction Amanda Tapping did for a school raised US$20k.  See, MGM?  Stargate women are powerful.
