Free Comic Book Day – go get your comics!

May 5th, 2012 by jawajames · 4 Comments

May the Fifth be with you! May the Thors be with you? Or something.. But get out to your local comics book shop to get your free comics for this annual celebration of sequential art. As previously mentioned, Dark Horse has a few different offerings, including a Han Solo and Chewbacca Star Wars story, ‘The Art of the Bad Deal’, in a flip-cover comic that also has a Zack Whedon-penned Serenity comic. Both stories have a common theme – a man and his ship. Dark Horse’s second freebie is a flip cover for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Guild. Combine both free comics together, and you will also have a two part story of Caitlin R. Kiernan’s Alabaster.

From other publishers for Free Comic Book Day: The Avengers, The New 52, Yo Gabba Gabba!, Simpsons, Mouse Guard, Transformers, Peanuts, and a whole lot more!

To find a comic shop near you, call 1-888-comicbook or visit ComicShopLocator.com.

Dark Horse teams up Star Wars, Firefly and Zack Whedon for Free Comic Book Day

November 24th, 2011 by Dunc · 3 Comments

No, it’s not a crossover, sadly. But you do get two-in-one: A Han and Chewbacca story shares a flip book with the Serenity folks, both tales penned by Zack Whedon (he co-wrote Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog with brothers Joss and Jed.) And Dark Horse will offer another flip book with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Guild. (via)

Free Comic Book is, as always, the first Saturday in May: This year, that means May 5, 2012. You’ll be able to find a participating comic shop near you with the Comic Shop Locator.

Something shiny for the Serenity fans out there

November 8th, 2010 by jawajames · 7 Comments

Not only did the fifty-six page Serenity: The Shepherd’s Tale hit comic book stores last week (and mine is on back order), delving into Book’s past, everyone in the ‘Verse get a small treat this week: Dark Horse and USA Today have an 8-page comic, Serenity: Downtime up – today just has the first four pages, but the story will continue tomorrow. Joss and Zack Whedon scripted the book on Shepherd Book, while Zack flies solo with the story for ‘Downtime’.

Using the web to its fullest potential, an online poster for the upcoming Terminator: Salvation has appeared on aintitcool.com.

Appearing at this past weekend’s Firefly con in Burbank, QMX has released a double-sided map of the ‘Verse for Firefly/Serenity fans: Where in the ‘Verse is (Carmen) Miranda?

And some British archaeologists search for the facts while watching the Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull DVD.

September 15th, 2008 by jawajames · No Comments

Not sure how this one slipped under the radar, other than the fact that we were too busy re-watching Dr. Horrible… Last month’s Myspace Dark Horse Presents included a Serenity comic one-shot, entitled “The Other Half”. Once again, Mal learns that jobs are never as simple as they are supposed to be. Check it out at Issue 13 of Myspace Dark Horse Presents

Google News from a better world

June 8th, 2008 by Dunc · No Comments

Once you scroll past stories like ‘China Withdraws from Tibet, with Apologies,’ ‘Darfur peace process well underway,’ and ‘Big Three Unveil Emissions-Free Lineup’ on this Google News spoof, there’s also some good news for Serenity, Harry Potter, and Star Wars fans. In theory, anyway… For particularly lazy scrollers, a screencap of the Entertainment section is under the cut. (via) (more…)

Real live pro author writes Firefly fanfic

February 5th, 2008 by Dunc · 1 Comment

Stephen Brust has released My Own Kind of Freedom, an unauthorized Firefly novel, on his web site for download. (via)

I’ll be very interested to see what the fanfic community has to say about this… It’s nothing new for a pro writer to have written or be writing fanfic, but usually there’s a tad more remove.

Serenity to fly again?

October 4th, 2007 by Dunc · 2 Comments

Alan Tudyk told Moviehole that the new Serenity DVD is selling so well there’s been talk of a sequel. Is it just false hope for Browncoats? Who knows… But they’ll probably be out buying yet more DVDs this weekend.
