The fandom minute: Wedge, dreams of Episode VII, collecting, princesses, day camp and go pro

July 12th, 2009 by Dunc · No Comments

A good wingman is hard to find. A t-shirt tribute to everyone’s favorite secondary character. This is an excellent shirt to wear when asking Aaron or Mike to sign your arm. (Yes men, you can get one, too.)

If you thought Episode I was slashtastic… Episode VII is among the five posters for sci-fi spinoffs that Sci Fi Wire really wants to see. Nice idea, but their suggestion of Peter Jackson is a bit much. (I mean, really? REALLY? Did no one see his King Kong? Lord of the Rings is one thing, but no giant gorilla movie has any right to go on that long.)

They don’t serve your kind. Duncan Jenkins’s guide to cantina collectibles.

Distressing damsels. Leia and Willow’s Sorsha are among Sci Fi Squad’s top ten princesses of sci-fi and fantasy.

Whoops. Seven classic star wars characters who totally dropped the ball.

Of course it’s Ann Arbor. TFN found a Star Wars day camp.

Lucas Online is hiring! Pablo and Bonnie have been out and about urging folks to apply for the Project Web Developer job. One could certainly do worse…

Eye candy: Yoda and Leia as ‘bots!

July 6th, 2009 by Dunc · No Comments

bots

Since it’s Monday after a holiday weekend, I figure we might as well just shrug it off with some cute: the Yoda Bot, Princess Leia Bot and Chewbacca from Bolts and Bots. Check their blog, Etsy, or Flickr for more bot creations.

The fandom minute: A blogger, 25 women, a Hutt and a roleplayer walk into a cantina…

As tempting as it was to pull something from ROTS...It was inevitable… Hot Chicks With Stormtroopers, AKA a nicer take off of internet ‘sensation’ Hot Chicks with Douchbags, or as we like to call it in this fandom… No, sorry. Too easy. (Speaking of douchebags, io9′s weekend commentators are certainly doing their darnedest. Bravo, gentlemen.)

The fandom minute: Morning crank edition

April 24th, 2009 by Dunc · No Comments

It’s art! Or not. No. Just no. Clone Wars character design, I know McQuarrie, and you sir are no McQuarrie. On the other hand, Christian Waggoner’s stuff is kinda cool.

Let them eat slime. This Jabba cake is appropriately disgusting yet totally hand-made. Pretty impressive.

Don’t strain yourself. Is Star Wars science fiction or fantasy? It’s sci-fantasy. Duh.

Listicles. Princess Leia is one of Yahoo’s lethal ladies; The prequels bottom out io9′s list of science fiction prequels, beating out even You-Know-Who’s Dune books on their scale of crappiness. Ouch.

Road trip! If you missed it, The Vader Project is now in Pittsburgh.

Fan Art: Happy Valentine’s Day!

Han and Leia by Steph Swanger (solofan29 @ deviantart.com)

Han and Leia by Steph Swanger takes the Gone With the Wind pose back to the source. (I figure since in past years I’ve tormented you with twincest, photoshoppery, and Law & Order, it wouldn’t hurt to go traditional. Just this once.)

The fandom minute: Should George Lucas retire?

January 8th, 2009 by Dunc · 2 Comments

George Lucas in Carbonite @ Celebration Japan (Bonnie Burton / StarWars.com)Scrap the Maker? The relaunched Sci-Fi Wire (now in blog form!) has come up with nine reasons for George Lucas to retire already. Cinematical then made a poll out of it, and ‘yes, please’ is winning. Your thoughts? I honestly don’t care all that much as long as he sticks to the prequel/intertrilogy era.

Your random Star Wars TV reference of the week

November 7th, 2008 by Dunc · 1 Comment

On Thursday’s 30 Rock, Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) dressed up as Princess Leia, put on a wacky accent, and claimed to be able to “read thoughts,” all to get out of jury duty.

You can see a brief clip at Gawker, and the full episode at Hulu.

I’m pretty sure it’s a hell of a lot easier than that – when I was called a few years back, they dismissed a guy in his early 20′s for basically wearing his nametag upside down. Or maybe it was the Young Jedi Knights book he was reading. Whatever – I ended up having to put in six days on that jury. Sigh.

Weird merchandise of the day: 80′s deco Leia

September 24th, 2008 by Dunc · 2 Comments

A limited edition print of Leia in the style of the 80′s favorite artist, Patrick Nagel. Honestly? I’m a little creeped out, and find myself with a strange urge for a corned beef sandwich. (Back in the 80′s, my parent’s favorite deli had a Nagel theme.)
