Pablo Hidalgo’s been at Comic Con Chile this weekend, and it seems that some of his statements have been lost in translation/misquoted/overstated, particularly something about the status of a Luke and Leia reunion. io9 reached out and got him to clarify. (Mind, he’s not saying it doesn’t happen, just that they were speaking of the Vanity Fair photos.)
→ John Boyega shows off Finn’s blaster for The Last Jedi on his Instagram. Like the rest of his new gear, or at least what we’ve seen, it’s basically the one Poe had in The Force Awakens.
→ Rian Johnson’s comments on romance in The Last Jedi sent some tremors through the hopes of a few of the trilogy’s shipping communities. Vanity Fair writer David Kamp shares the full quote in context.
→ Johnson’s shot of Annie Leibovitz shooting them, as seen in the Vanity Fair video. Shotception!
→ And finally, in spoiler corner, some Lego sets have leaked. They feature at least one newish vehicle, minifigs of Supreme Leader Snoke (which may confirm his new look,) Vice Admiral Holdo, a new(ish) variation of droid and a rank change for Poe. The images aren’t long for this world, but they are up at Imgur for the moment. (via)
While we wait for the big Vanity Fair spread tomorrow, Entertainment Weekly shares some Finn intel from John Boyega – some late-breaking Celebration quotes. He’s a “big deal” for real, plus:
“There’s some additional few things that need to be done to make him mobile. He’s definitely in a place where he needs some help,” Boyega says.
He says a lightsaber injury is “really brutal,” and talks a bit about the misson with Rose as well.
There were a lot of baby Kylos last year. The name jumped the popularity ranks from #3269 in 2015 to #901 in 2016, according to the U.S. Social Security Administration. So it’s not incredibly popular (to contrast, Ben was #704, and Benjamin is #6) but it is getting more popular. And note – it’s still less popular than Anakin, which is #778, up from #910.
At #175 Finn is the most popular sequel-trilogy related name associated with a major character – but it’s in been in wide use and gaining in popularity for more than a decade now, so we can’t peg that to Star Wars alone. Rey hasn’t shown any major growth, though it did jump from 904 to 868 (though as a male name – it’s not in the top 1000 for girls.)
As for the old standbys, Leia is #321, while Luke is #29. Poe, Han, Padme and Armitage (I had to look it up just for kicks) are all unranked.
John Boyega revealed a gift from Rian Johnson on his Instagram, and a The Last Jedi hint – of sorts. The illustration expresses Boyega’s “frustration with the most complex Star Wars lingo.” So what could a bio-hexacrypt be, and what does it have to do with Finn? Tumblr user Bripenguin13 has a degree in cell biology and one (possible) explaination.
Meanwhile, if you’re still poking at The Last Jedi title, Johnson has an answer. (And more.)
StarWars.com has officially annouced that Force Friday II is set for September 1, but more importantly (for our purposes) they’ve also given us our first look at Rey, Finn and Poe in The Last Jedi. Rey is not only front and center with a lightsaber, but she’s sporting a new hairstyle! Finn has a new shirt! Poe looks… Pretty much the same!
Head below the cut for the full packaging. Continue reading
Making Star Wars is back today with a description and sketch of Finn’s new look – or one of them – and how it ties into a new mission. It includes another new location, which may be related to yesterday’s rumor.
We’ve got two more The Force Awakens commentary track previews today. In the first, at Yahoo, J.J. Abrams reveals that it was a suggestion from Selma director Ava DuVernay that lead to a key shot during Rey and Kylo’s duel. The second, at IGN, is about how Rey and Finn’s initial meeting changed.
Making Star Wars has a brief description of Finn’s first scene in Episode VIII. This is fairly mild as spoilers go, but consider yourself warned.
Coming out on Tuesday is Finn’s Story by Jesse J. Holland (a companion volume to Rey’s Story) that tells the tale of The Force Awakens from Finn’s perspective for younger readers. Wednesday brings The Force Awakens #4 from Marvel.
We have a few other things coming up later this month, so check out our book schedule.
With The Force Awakens releasing on digital tonight, we got a couple of new things today, not least of all two new still, above. (via.)
USA Today has an interview with and new video clip featuring John Boyega. He talks about training for the lightsaber fight on Starkiller Base and the hardest secret to keep. (Bonus: Sleeveless Adam Driver.)
At Fandango, Matthew Wood on the effect they were going for with the voice modulation on Kylo Rens helmet.
Expect plenty more to come, as the Blu-ray is out Tuesday the 5th. The Star Wars Facebook page is planning a live Q&A with Daisy Ridley for Monday, and you can submit questions now.
