The fandom minute: Secrets, Lightsabre, Fanboys

  • At random: In the latest PostSecret, someone confesses “Over the years, I’ve discovered Star Wars fans make the best lovers.” Aww.
  • Fansites: Lightsabre has the third part of their Robert Watts interview, a Star Wars Blueprints giveaway for UK fans, and a report from Polcon.
  • Another Fanboys release date: It’s listed for November 26 on the Weinstein Company website, TFN notes, as well as a (another) possible DVD date.
  • Fandom: Report on a Metro Detroit library event with the 501st’s Great Lakes Garrison and the Rebel Legion’s Midwest Base.

SDCC ’08: Saturday and Sunday at the con

While I don’t doubt there were still plenty of Star Wars fans still roaming around Saturday and Sunday, with most of the panels being on Friday there wasn’t much new floating around. Well, except for the Mandalorian wedding. (Oye vey.) And Cinematical posted a brief review of Fanboys. And the official site has more pictures, of course, while Rebelscum continues exhaustively documenting the booths and products of every licensee.

SDCC ’08: Star Wars Fan Movie Challenge winners

Rebelscum was reporting live from the fan film awards… Erm, Fan Movie Challenge ceremony last night. (There’s some stuff about Fanboys in there too, as well as a lot of fanboy squee.)

Here are the winners:

Congrats, everyone!

UPDATE: StarWars.com goes a bit more in-depth on the awards, including a transcript of the Fanboys portion of the evening.

Here comes San Diego Comic-Con

This weekend brings yet another con – the con – San Diego Comic-Con.The highlight for CJers? The Supercolossal Fan Race, of course!

  • Events: StarWars.com has the schedule of Star Wars events (and TFN has LucasArts) but since there’s so much going on, best to check the full schedule as well.
  • Merchandise: Zazzle will be holding a Star Wars election (with new merchandise lauching for those not at the con,) and of course Star Wars Shop will have plenty of exclusives
  • Book and comic guests: Writers Karen Traviss, Ryder Windham, Jeremy Barlow and Dan Wallace will be on hand, while artists include Chris Trevas, Chris Reiff and Tommy Lee Edwards, Travis Charest, Adam Hughes, Dustin Weaver, Dan Parsons and Matthew and Shaw Fillbach will be among the those signing. TFN scedules for the DK, Del Rey, and Dark Horse booths, while you can get Traviss’ event schedule (and subsequent book tour) on her website.
  • Fanboys: An exclusive screening will be held at the con, with 300 tickets being given away at the Star Wars Fan Movie Challenge Awards on Thursday.

Fans in the news: Ernie Cline, 501st

  • We haven’t heard much from the Fanboys camp lately, but UGO talks to the film’s co-writer, Ernie Cline. He has good news, though – director Kyle Newman is back on board, and his cut is the one that will be released later this year.
  • The Pioneer Press features Minnesota droidmaker and costumer Michael Hansen and pals.
  • And there’s more 501st action over at The Lake Oswego Review, which covered a Make-A-Wish event in Oregon, where Darth Vader gifted Owen Miller, a young boy with cancer, with his own stormtrooper armor and lightsaber.

Did the Fanboys protests fizzle?

IMAGE: Darth Weinstein and securityLackluster turnout and loads of security kept Fanboys protesters from making much of a scene, says The Hollywood Reporter. However, it’s worth noting that they’re pinning organization of the protests on the 501st, which has had a statement on their site since Wednesday that the group is neutral on the Fanboys backlash.

In any case, Stop Darth Weinstein is celebrating boycott target Superhero Movie‘s $9.5 million box office this weekend.
