Today in Rogue One: Hey, was that…?

ro-ghost-loweres

Twitter had a nice freak-out this afternoon as a ship resembling the Ghost from the Star Wars Rebels cartoon was spotted in a new TV commercial. (There’s more evidence on the Tumblr.) Easter egg? Cameo? Only time will tell.

And that was only one of several new commercials dropped today. Here’s one, and here’s one and here’s one that’s actually on the official site and in high res! Of course it’s the one with the least new footage.

Speaking of new footage, there are two new scenes as well: One with Orson Krennic and Galen Erso (which seems to answer a question I asked in my Catalyst review) and another from the call sign scene. There’s also a new Chinese trailer, introduced by Donnie Yen and Jiang Wen.

ro-cassian-vert→ So many more interviews today! John Knoll on how they approached the film and changes to Darth Vader’s costume. Gareth Edwards addresses the reshoots and George Lucas’ review. Riz Ahmed on being an ‘average Joe’ in the GFFA. And finally, Diego Luna on his research into being a soldier and why Cassian isn’t a typical hero. He’s really happy to be here, you guys.

→ Could something in the background of the recent creature featurette have given us a hint at that mysterious kneeling scene from the very first teaser?

→ Thanks to both The Force Awakens and Rogue One, Star Wars was Twitter’s top trending movie topic of 2016.

→ Here’s Epcot’s Spaceship Earth being transformed into the Death Star.

→ A new Rogue One collection launched at Hot Topic and Torrid today. I’m not sure this one really translates…

Rogue One emojjis are now in the Star Wars app!

Today in Rogue One: Kennedy doesn’t feel a need to ‘cater’ to those backlashing female leads

ro-ew-jynFelicity Jones is profiled by The New York Times – but there’s a very interesting quote in there from Kathleen Kennedy on the recent backlash to female leads in Hollywood:

“I have a responsibility to the company that I work with,” she said. “I don’t feel that I have a responsibility to cater in some way.”

She added, “I would never just seize on saying, ‘Well, this is a franchise that’s appealed primarily to men for many, many years, and therefore I owe men something.’”

Jones has quite a lot to say about her character, Jyn Erso, in Glamour:

She’s a bit of a wounded animal when you meet her. There were moments when she’s been blown over, she’s scrambling to get up, and she falls. It’s important that she’s not perfect.

She describes Jyn to a blend of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo. She also addresses being a feminist, how Jyn isn’t sexualized, and being paid fairly.

→ Another new TV spot, ‘Contact.’

Today in Rogue One: Movie’s second EW cover brings space battle reveal, new stills

With only weeks to go, Rogue One gets a second Entertainment Weekly cover. (The Darth Vader version is a Barnes & Noble exclusive.) The catchup: Rogue One commercials, why the movie’s message matters

ro-trailer2

First off, there are two new Rogue One commercials out this week:

Anyone seen them in the wild yet?

The Rogue One advertising blitz is taking off

Lucasfilm released a new tv spot – our first for the movie itself – for Rogue One today. The pieces are (mostly) familiar, but assembly may raise some questions on what we know so far. (Though recall the TFA trailers also had bits of dialogue that didn’t make the final cut.)

Gareth Edwards on reverse engineering Rogue One

ro-jyn-k2-usat1200

It’s holiday movie preview season, and that means that Rogue One director Gareth Edwards is making the rounds. Entertainment Weekly also gets a new photo and some chatter about having to reverse engineer the film from the ending, while USA Today also gets a new pic (above), but another interesting quote, namely “the film doesn’t unfold how you think.” So everyone doesn’t die?

Felicity Jones talks Jyn, her favorite Disney princess and bruises in Vanity Fair.

Today in The Force Awakens: Lawrence Kasdan, Carrie Fisher, and so much more.

Abrams and KasdanToday’s must read is Lawrence Kasdan at the Los Angeles Times. He talks about coming back to Star Wars, working with J.J. Abrams, canon (pure gold here), and the inate goofiness of the original trilogy. Just some great stuff.

Plus, on Rian Johnson’s Episode VIII: “He’s going to make some weird thing.”

(The LAT also headed to Abu Dhabi.)

→ Carrie Fisher was on Live! with Kelly and Michael this morning, where she dubs her poster hairstyle “the baboon ass.” She’s in the Wall Street Journal as well.

→ The Fiat Chrysler Star Wars commercials are surprisingly clever (particularly given how weird their Hunger Games ones are) and one even has today’s MVP, Mark Hamill! (Okay, he’s just narrating.)

→ On the talk shows last night, we had Lupita Nyong’o and Adam Driver.

J.J. Abrams’ assistant Morgan Dameron on having a character named after her.

→ J.J. Abrams and John Boyega are firmly on Team Han Shot First. Sorry, George.

Chat alerts: There’s a cast Q&A tomorrow on Twitter, while John Boyega and Oscar Isaac will be answering questions via Complex Magazine on Tumblr.
