Couldn’t they have ended just a few seconds later, after the “The Force will be with you… always”? Oh well. Nice little reflection nonetheless.

Y’know, I liked the 1977 planet explosions better.

But the rest? Even though it’s not my ANH, it does look better.

I prefer the old approach to Yavin. The planet overhead just looks way more impressive.
As for the rest: Needless changes, mostly. The old sandcrawler looked pretty bad, for sure, but honestly: you never ever change a classic, because if you do, it won’t be a classic anymore. Unless you wait a couple of years, then you’ll have a neo-classic. ;-)

they did leave out the ‘fixing’ of the death star detention block corridor background (where the set ended, and the matte painting began.. the perspective of the corridor didn’t line up.. it’s as if the corridor went from being flat to ramping upward in the background…
starwars.com did a huge spread a few years back on the changes in the DVD, and seemed to use many many shots of this improvement, which apparently no one would have noticed otherwise.
