Sword of the Jedi trilogy “may or may not happen”

Sword of the Jedi

Knights Archive spotted a comment by author Christie Golden on Facebook that seems to place the Sword of the Jedi trilogy in the same limbo as Paul Kemp’s duology.

Christie Golden said today that it “may or may not happen (don’t know yet.)”

The comments seem to be on a friendslocked post, and I debated over posting it… But it’s already out there, and fans really want to know about this trilogy.

In light of the upcoming sequel films, the status of the existing post-ROTJ storylines has been in question. Everything released since July’s Crucible has been set during ‘safer’ eras of the saga, during and between the first trilogies. It seems that LucasBooks has adapted a ‘wait and see’ method as regards the post-ROTJ releases that were announced before the Disney/sequel trilogy plans were made public. And with comments like this – and the Essential Characters cancellation – I don’t expect us to get any official info regarding these books anytime soon.

  1. Definitely makes it seem that the new film trilogy could take place after the events in Crucible. Makes sense seeing how the age of the characters/actor match up perfect within the SW timeframe. Won’t see the Solo boys tho.

Not going to happen. All signs point to a whole new post-ROTJ. They may reuse/repurpose bits and pieces of the existing EU, but they’re not going to take it whole. (Nor should they, it’s a mess.) Sorry, dude.

  2. I think this is what has made me lose interest in the EU. I don’t care if it follows what will happen in the new films, I like the characters and worlds they have created, but the Disney deal has killed all of that so far.

  3. I’m THRILLED the post-ROTJ timeline books are ceasing (or at least that looks likely). THRILLED.

My Zahn and X-Wing books aren’t going away. They’re on my shelves, and duplicates are on my Kindle. I can re-read them any time I choose.

But I am THRILLED the Denning Rey era is apparently having a line drawn under it and consigned to the dustheap of alternate histories. So, so, SO happy!

It’s a travesty (or is that Traviss-ty?) what Del Rey did to the OT characters, and those books deserve to be labeled horrific and hopefully forgotten AU. Nothing Lucasfilm/Disney puts out could ever be worse than Denning & co’s scribbles.

Plus, I have faith in Jennifer Heddle’s editing skills and her overall literary taste (I’m familiar with several of the writers she acquired during her stint at S&S). She deserves the chance to craft a new post-ROTJ book universe to go along with the new films.

I bet you anything before too long everyone who wants to hang on to the current EU will be throwing their copy of (shudder) “Crucible” in the Goodwill bin to make room for the new timeline books…

  4. There is one bit of hope.

Perhaps, in their infinite wisdom, they’ve decided that they don’t want conflicting canon to exist in written/film form. The books’ current chronology conveniently matches up with the ages of the actors and the inevitable timeframe in which 7, 8 & 9 must take place.

So is it possible that they’ve decided to embrace EU canon, and script the newest adventure for after Crucible, respecting enough of what came before it as to not conflict, but writing a whole new adventure as they like it, within a certain context.

I sure hope so. I would be OK with a lack of novels (for a while) as long as they give way to film story that picks up where they leave off. Re-writing the EU would be a disaster and totally undo all the brilliant and irrevocable work that came before.

  5. @Zannah Um, yes.

@Peter To quote Dunc’s comment above: “Not going to happen.”
