Rumor: David Oyelowo cast in Episode VII?

David Oyelowo

Hot on the heels of the news that David Oyelowo might have a part in Rebels, Jedi News’ spy is saying that Oyelowo has actually been cast in Episode VII. His Rebels character will be part of the setup for his character in the movie: “All part of the major EpVII co-ordinated push being pulled together by Simon Kinberg and the first major sign that Rebels will be the vehicle to setup the masses for EpVII fever!!”

Likely? Maybe. Official? Not by a long shot. As always, we wait on word from Lucasfilm before we really believe anything.

  1. I figured they might try to connect Rebels to the sequel trilogy, but having a single actor play major characters in both (whether it’s the same character or not), is a pretty big commitment and casting decision.

If it’s the same character – I hope that it’s a droid. But I’d prefer it to be separate characters, with the rough gap of a generation between Rebels and Ep7. Unless it’s a character that gets frozen in carbonite! ;)

David Oyelowo has been in both Red Tails and Lincoln, so he’s obviously on LFL’s and Kennedy’s radar.

  2. Yeah, I was hoping Rebels would be its own thing. But I guess I wouldn’t be really surprised if they go for an obvious connection.

  3. I have to say, this is the first rumor I’ve truly been exciting for to be true. Connecting Rebels with VII would feel like the EU and the continuity its tried to keep all these years. Now we’ll start getting the ground work for the new continuity.

  4. Regardless of whether this specific rumor is true or not, I expect we will see connections between Rebels and the ST.

Pablo has mentioned that a tighter meshing of storylines across products was a goal of LFL’s new Story Group.

  5. Plus: They connected projects before. Remember when Pablo said that some of the ideas for the live-action series ended up in The Clone Wars? The TV universe was supposed to be one big entity even before the takeover, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they create this big, multi-media universe now.

As to Mr. Oyelowo: He wasn’t on my radar in the past, but he seems to be an old-school character actor who isn’t afraid of blockbuster cinema. In that regard, he could be a perfect choice.

  6. Hmmmm… Character frozen in carbonite to explain a lack of aging between Rebels and Ep. VII. Could be an interesting twist to bring Ahsoka into the Ep. VII crew.

    1. If he’s Lando’s kid, they wouldn’t need set him up in Rebels. I think that means a totally brand new character.
