Rumor: Obi-Wan and Maul to face-off in spinoff?

SPINOFF RUMORS: Take seriously at your own risk.Cosmic Book News is at it again! Today they’ve set on another spin-off concept, one featuring Obi-Wan during his Tatooine exile with old buddy Darth Maul and a possible appearance by a young Luke Skywalker. (via)

A similar story was published in 2005 as the lead story of Star Wars: Visionaries. But as story concepts go, we’ve heard worse, and Ewan McGregor hasn’t been shy about his willingness to return. But, as always, it’s only a rumor.

  1. No thank you. We’re getting the Kenobi book by JJM that will cover that time period. I’d rather they have spin offs of characters in the ST set between RotJ and Ep.7.

  2. This has several advantages for LFL, really: They don’t have to recast anyone (unless they get turned down) except finding a kid for Luke, everyone who could be involved is around the right age or could probably pass for the right age any time in the next 10 to 15 years, and anything with Obi-Wan in this time period can just be a fun adventure story, no destroying of any mysteries ala the Yoda or Palpy stuff that have been bandied about.

And it doesn’t have to be the Maul story, for all we know JJM’s Kenobi might work as a template, too.

It wouldn’t be my choice – none of the spinoff options that have been reported are anything I have much desire to see, and I’m rather ambivalent about the concept in general – but it would do.

  3. I actually think Ewan McGregor worked really well as Obi-Wan in the prequels, so it makes a good deal of sense to take advantage of his presence and willingness to return to Star Wars.

  4. I’m incredibly excited for the Kenobi novel, but getting to see Ewan McGregor play him again easily trumps that.

Not sure a Kenobi vs. Maul movie is the best route to go though, so hopefully if a Kenobi spinoff does come to pass they’ll have a better story up their sleeves than that.

Or like Dunc said, JJM’s book could very well be a good starting point for Disney.

I thought this was the most likely thing to happen, but then someone pointed out to me that Bob Iger talked about spin-offs for existing characters, which, presumably, means ones who have already been invented.

Totally agree. For me, the SW characters work best as part of something bigger than themselves. Han wasn’t entertaining because he was a cocky, small-time smuggler, he was entertaining because he was a cocky, small-time smuggler caught up in huge galaxy-changing events.

  6. Ewan as Kenobi would be amazing! You can leave Maul out, though. I really dislike Maul as a character and found his Clone Wars resurrection pretty annoying.

  7. As Ewan made Obi-Wan my favorite PT character, and JAT continued that into TCW, I’d love to see Ewan reprise his role again…but as the Force Ghost of Obi-Wan in something, possibly Ep7, after RotJ.

  8. I really liked that comic story (despite not being thrilled with the prequels) and would love to see it handled in live-action, perhaps as a short film. Maybe one of the “one shot” SW films Disney is supposedly planning could be a collection of short tales from different eras?

  9. There is enough there for a whole film, for sure.

Generally, I would not believe a piece of the EU is being turned into a story because it just seems like fan wishes expressed as rumor.

What I do find interesting about this idea is that the artist who worked on Visionaries is that these are the people who worked with Lucas for years. It would seem the connection they have to Lucas and their ideas would be considered differently for that reason alone.

I wish this were true, but I still think it probably isn’t. Hopefully I’m wrong though.
