Her Universe: Only 300 Mara Jade shirts at CVI

The Mara shirt, featuring art by Cat Staggs, is one of HU’s two Celebration exclusives, and there will only be 300 available. Similarly limited will be an R2-D2 charm. For those not attending, 50 of each will be available through the Her Universe site on August 23rd. The good news: They’ll have the shirt in sizes all the way up to 4X!

The Rebel and Imperial tank tops will also be debuting, though those appear to be part of the permanent line.

Also among the announcements is for the con are Her Universe photo shoots and the Bullied panel.

So why is the Mara shirt a limited engagement? Ashley explains:

Huh. Who knew?

UPDATE: Cat Staggs has posted the Mara art to her DeviantArt account, if you want a closer look at it.

  1. I love the idea of a Mara shirt. LOVE it.

    But the damn catsuit!?

At least her hair is a reasonable color.

  2. Love the idea of the shirt as well. Definitely not wasting my money on a picture of the catsuit, though. I know it was inevitable, but I expected more from a women’s clothing line. Ashley should have known better.

  3. Well, as I wrote last week… Yes, a lot of us hate it, but it’s also become the character’s main identifying feature. Put her in another outfit and half the fandom will think she’s [insert random redhead here.]

    It’s a double-edged sword.

  4. Dunc- I agree with you but the logic would mean that Leia would only be recognized in her Slave Leia outfit because it’s what is used for her 95/100 times. Am I the only woman just a little peeved at all the Slave Leia gear in the store this time?

  5. Leia is a movie character with several iconic outfits. Yes, I totally agree that Slave Leia is grossly overused, but there exist other options for Leia that Mara simply doesn’t have: The white dress w/ the buns from ANH, etc.. Pretty much anything from the movies is going to be instantly recognizable, because they’re the movies. Plus, you know, Carrie Fisher. But you draw a generic brunette in white and hair buns, everyone knows it’s Leia.

Mara has been so consistently portrayed in the catsuit – and doesn’t have a set ‘face’ – that it has become what IDs the character as herself. Yes, there are other outfits, but with the possible exception of the green thing from VoTF cover, what is a casual fan going to recognize? (And that’s only if they’re EU fans with good memories.)

I mean, yeah, I’m not thrilled to see the jumpsuit yet again. But I’m not surprised to see it.

  6. They could identify the character with text as well though. I mean, if they’re willing to do “fett-ish” puns, there’s gotta be something they can do with “Jade.” (Jaded?).

I don’t blame them for using the catsuit on the shirt, but it’d be cool to see a shirt without it.

  7. The argument for the catsuit is so circular– they use it because that’s what they’ve used so far the most. 501st basically recognizes it and the Arica outfit, so that’s where the costumers are going to go, which continues the idea that people only recognize the catsuit. Put a picture of her with Luke, sleeves and red-gold hair and we’re good. As for Leia- it’s Slave outfit, White ANH, Ceremonial Dress. All these years I’ve seen only Dajuan do Endor camo (I think it is Leia’s) and once a half finished Bespin jacket. While Leia may have been in the movies and has a wardrobe (though not as big as Padme’s) it’s down to two outfits- either completely covered or practically naked. Hrm. Maybe I’ll make an Endor Ewok Dress :)
Just tired of all the sexual imagery. We don’t get Han half naked, though at least we do get Luke in Bacta tank pens this year.

  8. SAD. I won’t get to the con til Saturday and I’m willing to guess these will be LONG GONE. :'(

  9. You guys are ragging on the outfit but you kinda missed a vital point here. She said they don’t have the rights to the SWEU which means they had to get special permission just to do this one shirt. This means they didn’t have free reign to do whatever they wanted, they had to find/make an image with an artist who would go along with this and for which Lucasfilm would sign off on. This puts Her Universe in a tough position where everyone else is pretty much calling the shots.

What we need to do now is make sure every one of those shirts is bought, show that Mara Jade and the SWEU in general are wanted/profitable and worth getting the rights for. Once Her Universe can play then I’m sure we’ll see more variety (like a L/M shirt, or personally I want one with Mara in an Imperial uniform!). Let’s show that there is a demand for Mara stuff! Maybe it will catch on in other areas as well.

Oh, and lets face it… at least the cat suit is much better than that stupid lavender leotard she wore in By The Emperor’s Hand…

Yes, they need permission to do an EU shirt, but aside from that, was the process all that different from when artists created movie-based shirts for them? Honestly, none of us are in position to know.

Yeah, that’s kind of what I was trying to say. In a roundabout way. Maybe I wandered a bit off-tangent. ;)

Oh lord, the interior art for BtEH is atrocious. Well, maybe I shouldn’t say atrocious: The artist was probably just the wrong pick for that book… He should have been drawing a Boba Fett story or something.

Now the BtEH covers are great, catsuit aside. #6 is my favorite.
