Indiana Jones and the comic cover false alarm

SW Artist Steve Anderson provided the staff of TheForce.net with a link to this piece, which, while cool, isn’t the cover of the comic adaptation of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, according to Jeremy Barlow at Dark Horse – instead, expect to see a new piece from Hugh Fleming (who did the awesome cover art for Shadows of the Empire comics, among other SW pieces.)

  1. I provided a link so fans could see the full image not the cropped image that was going around.

At the time I did that, I had no idea that made artwork wasn’t going to be used- that news wasn’t out yet. I had a lot of emails sent to me with links saying my artwork was going to be used including the Dark Horse site here. http://www.darkhorse.com/profile/profile.php?sku=15-034

I was only trying to do a nice thing for Indy fans and provide them with the full image the way it was created- the way is was meant to be seen.

When I work for Lucasfilm, I have no idea what products my artwork will show up on. It is totally out of my control and I have absolutely no say in it and it’s always a surprise when I see it on merchandise.
They hire me to do pieces for them, but after I hand it off, it’s theirs to do what they want with it.

The day the news broke and I started receiving emails about it, I was terribly sick in bed with the flu. I thought it was too good too be true, but once I started checking the links the next day- it seemed to be true. Needless to say I was thrilled beyond belief. But believe me, I’m thrilled Hugh Fleming is doing the cover because he is one of my all-time favorite artist. He’ll really give the Indy property the justice I couldn’t. It was Hugh, Drew Struzan, Mathieu Lauffray and Dave Doorman whose work I sought out over and over that influenced me back in the early nineties. Hugh’s “Tales of the Jedi” comic series for Dark Horse was a HUGE influence on me years ago, and the whole series still sits about eight feet from me today as I type this.

I know Hugh will produce some magnificent covers that will make everyone happy!

    Steve Anderson

  2. Steve, thanks for coming by and giving us the scoop – your Indy artwork really captures the essence of Professor Jones!

Hope you are over the flu!
