Lucasfilm and the strike

TFN contacted Lucasfilm to ask how the writer’s strike will affect them, and got the following statement:

“Lucasfilm has many projects in various stages of production. We do not at this point know what impact, if any, the strike will have.”

Well, it’s not like we have solid dates on any of the TV stuff to begin with… And I doubt we’d see much of anything substantial before Indy IV and TFU.

  1. Given GL’s distaste for Hollywood guilds, does Lucasfilm even use union contracts? (I always thought not, but I could be wrong.) If not, the current strike shouldn’t prevent writers, even WGA ones, from completing scripts for a SW show.

(Indy IV might be different, since it’s at least being distributed by Paramount. But since the TV shows are being produced before they are sold to a network, there might not be anything preventing LFL from business as usual.)

  2. Good point, Stooge. I know he has/had issues with the director’s guild, but I’m not sure how that relates with the writers.

Indy is done filming, though. I suppose the strike could impact reshoots, but I’m not sure how much…

  3. Well, Lucas was fined by both the DGA and the WGA after ESB was released, and though he was more ticked at the DGA, I’m pretty sure he personally left both unions. And no studio, to my knowledge, has a contract with one guild but not the others — they’re either union or they’re not. Obviously, Lucasfilm does its own thang all the time, so maybe they don’t play by the normal rules… still, I’d be pretty surprised if they had a DGA contract, so I doubt they have one with the WGA.

‘Course, I’ve been wrong before. And thank goodness Indy is in the can!
