Red Tails to take flight in January 2012

StarWars.com announced today the release date for Red Tails: January 20, 2012. The film, being produced by George Lucas and directed by Anthony Hemingway, focuses on the story of the Tuskegee airmen in World War II, and stars Cuba Gooding Jr., Terrence Howard, Bryan Cranston, and Ne-Yo.

January seems a telling time for Fox to release the film – it seems that it is neither going for Oscar contention nor summer blockbuster status, and it comes out less than a month before The Phantom Menace 3-D.

  1. They are actually showing this in Oshkosh this week during the EAA show. I understand George was bringing it himself. My husband is up there and he was going to try to watch. If he did we might be able to get you an early review.

  2. Wow, I didn’t even know they’d started shooting yet. It’ll be nice to finally see what they do with this story. Drama looks maybe a little heavy handed, but it’s a fine trailer. Plus I sort of like the idea that the black pilots get the gig because everyone is sick of all the white guys aggressively pre-enacting Top Gun.

  3. Okay, so the showing at the EAA thing got rained out. *is totally bummed about this* Everything there is done outdoors so when the thunder storm moved in it had to be called off. On the other hand, the trailer here was shown the next night prior to that evening’s film. So, no love on an early review. (Which is sad because my husband is a big air person and ALSO a big film buff so we could have gotten some real info. Wah!)

  4. Awesome. I’ve been looking forward to this pretty much because I feel like it’s something Lucas has been wanting to make for ages.

  5. Trailer looks good, I reckon i’ll go to the cinema for this. Did GL direct or just produce?

  6. It’s cool that Lucas is making a film about the pilots that inspired his Star Wars dogfights and subsequently the whole visual style of the original trilogy. That being said, I’m a bit apprehensive about the January release date. January is the month where studios send flop movies to die. I sure hope this one isn’t a flop.

  7. The surviving Tuskegee airmen were all at the Ranch some years ago, for extensive video interviews. When you get the chance, check out the Lucasfilm “Double Victory” documentary as well. While the movie is inspired by true events, the documentary will fill in much of the actual true events.

  8. I’m looking forward to checking out the “Double Victory” documentary when it comes out – presumably it will be released about the same time as the movie?
