Star Wars Blu-Ray details coming May the 4th

StarWars.com sent out an email containing the above image earlier. May the 4th? May the 4th. Well, at least we have something other than bad puns to look forward to on Wednesday.

  1. Hoping “all” is not revealed except the final box art for the 3 sets and the various disc images. I would like the bonus content to remain a surprise, not like New Line did with revealing everything on the upcoming LOTR Extended Editions BD set.

  2. I’d rather not have the bonus content a surprise. Wouldn’t you hate getting the set and then find out that all the special features have either already been released, or suck? No, saying what’s on there is a must.

Now, I wouldn’t complain if there are a bunch of nice easter eggs hidden somewhere when it comes out for us to find, that was the best part about the complete set of LOST.

  3. I’m hoping for “From Star Wars To Jedi: The Making of a Saga” on this set. Sansweet it was being considered at one moment. I’m hopeful for a lot of archival stuff.

  4. Yeah, I’m hoping for some vintage material like that too. “The Making of Star Wars” is another one.

Not gonna happen, but isolated scores, particularly for AOTC and ROTS, would be nice.

But really, as long as it delivers on the deleted scenes and everybody’s lightsabers are the color they’re supposed to be, I’ll be happy.

  5. It’s one of those things… I want it, but not at the loss of something more entertaining. I know that special in better quality isn’t going to make it any better. Heh. I think the question is, if they include it, is it an Easter egg or listed in the features?

  6. Think I have to agree that they need to announce what is on there. We are not the ones they need to market this set to. They had us (the hardcore fans) at “Star Wars on Blu-Ray.” We’re gonna buy no matter what. They need to market this to the rest of the public…the casual fans…to convince them that they need to replace their old DVD copies. Best way to do that is to market the heck out of the special features and extra scenes.

  7. This could be the last time Star Wars is out on physical media and not server side. So I hope they make this really nice as a product itself.

I have to question though, do non-hardcore fans really care if they get extras? Do they even watch them? Either way, I suppose it does add an air of “value” to the set as the consumer will feel like they are getting a lot for their money.

The biggest limitation for extras has always been space. With Blu-ray, there is a lot of room for extras, especially non-1080p content. So as a hardcore fan, I expect a lot.

I do agree that they could release just all six films and I would buy it. But I wouldn’t be as jazzed about it.

  8. I’m happy to see LFL embracing the May the 4th for marketing purposes. :)

And if they have The Holiday Special on there, even as an Easter egg, that would explain most of the natural disasters that have happened over the past few months.

  9. I can’t wait to hear about the details!

I still can’t wrap my mind around who would only purchase one of the trilogy sets instead of the entire set. I mean, really.

  10. @Jen: I’m gonna be on the other side of the ledger and purchase all 3 sets, as I am a big SW media collector.

  11. Jen: If one is a casual fan, not a completest, and doesn’t like one of the trilogies… Well, I can see it. There’ll be a lot of that about.

I’ll probably buy the whole thing for the extras, but if I wasn’t obsessive I’d just go for the OT. I never watch my PT DVDs as it is.

  12. Wonder if they will package the Complete Saga in a special tin. Maybe a Vader helmet that comes off to reveal the discs or an R2 with a head that flips up.

  13. Justin: How ’bout the Falcon? (If they haven’t done anything like that yet… Why not?)

  14. @Dunc: Sure, I’d be game for any type of special packaging for the Complete Saga. Now would be the perfect time to release one.

  15. I’m actually pretty sure it’s against Lucasfilm’s house rules to release a saga box set without putting Vader on it.
Personally I hope for stunning individual covers in the grand tradition of John Alvin’s 1995 international video covers (ANH, TESB, ROTJ. I’ve never seen pictures that more fully embodied the saga’s romantic spirit of adventure and magic than his. Those were the days.

  16. You know, I don’t even have a Blu-ray player, but I’m pretty interested in seeing what covers they go for.

After all these years of having montages (both painted and photoshopped), I’d really like to see them do something different – like a single, bold image for each film. Minimalist. Like a single character, illuminated only by a lightsabre. You know, something classy.

Alas, I fear cheap, floating head photo montages will win out, but I can dream at least.
