Discussion/Reaction: Game of Thrones premiere

Well, I’m pretty pleased with it so far. Did you watch it? What did you think?

For those who’ve read the books: Please don’t spoil anything past the first episode!

  1. Been a while since we did one of these. (BSG?!?)

I don’t think there was a single false note in this episode… And I can’t think of a damn thing to say, which is a very good sign. Can’t wait for more!

  2. Unbelievable! The casting could not have been better and the acting was awesome! The only character who wasn’t how I envisioned her from the books was Cat, she seems too old. I wanted another Lena Headey-type. Also, the look of Prince Joffrey, even without his speaking a line, just so perfectly encapsulates his character. (must..not..spoil..book) Amazing show and I can’t wait until next week!

  3. It’s so hard to talk about last night’s premiere without spoiling anything! I’m really, really happy with what I saw. Hope they can keep it going at the same pace and quality.

I watched it twice (my DVR clicked on right at the start of the final scene and I MISSED it) so I watched it through again and enjoyed it even more. The pacing was just right to me — not too ponderous but not rushing through what clearly must have been a lot of exposition in the books.

I haven’t read the books yet (on my list now for sure, though) so I can’t say if it’s faithful to them or anything, but I really liked this first episode..

  4. I second things – looked to old. Other than that, fantastically well done, and incredibly faithful. Almost too faithful…made me want to just to read the books.

  5. I really enjoyed it. There were only two things that bugged me:

    1) The Dothraki. They seemed kind of B horror-ish or Beastmaster-y.

2)The Hound. He just didn’t look…how he looked in my head. He looked a little goofy. Sandor is one of my favorite characters, and is NOT goofy…

  6. Catelyn did look a little old, but then again the north is a hard place. Maybe that’s what they were going for. But as far as characterization she and everyone else seemed spot on, just based on the one episode. And can I adopt Arya as my little sister?

Can we talk about how awesome the opening credit sequence was, too? It’s one of the best I’ve ever seen.

  7. Just got around to it. I liked it well enough, but it didn’t blow me away the same way that it seems to have most people. The casting all seems really good so far, but I’ve also been a huge Sean Bean fan since forever and already liked most everyone else on the cast so that’s at least partly expected. The show is also incredibly pretty to look at.

Past that…some of the sex in this episode felt a bit gratuitous. I get the idea of sex for the sake of sex in entertainment, but I would have liked to see it be more purpose driven. Especially in a pilot episode. There’s also something just slightly off in the atmosphere of the show for me. I haven’t put my finger on it yet though, and probably won’t be able to for a couple more episodes.

For the most, I was pleased. But I remain somewhat apprehensive.

  8. Being a newcomer to the series I wasn’t sure what to expect. Seemed very good to me, obviously the first few episodes will set the scene for the various factions but seemed great to me.

    Those white walkers were awesome!
