Sunday WTF: The Three Musketeers 3D

March 27th, 2011 by Dunc · 7 Comments

Wait wait… Does this new Three Musketeers actually have a touch of steampunk? With a ninja Milla Jovovich? And Orlando Bloom looking ridiculous? And for the love of whoever, will someone get poor Percy Jackson a better wig?

Well, as we so eloquently say here in the UK, that looks like a right load of pants…poor Orlando, from Lord of the Rings to this, which looks like a direct-to-DVD film…

Reminds me of the Sherlock Holmes action film. You want to make an action film, fine. But stop taking established literary characters and making them completely unrecongnizable. Bleh.

I have a deep and abiding love for the 1993 Three Musketeers film, so I’m in absolutely no position to mock bad wigs and cheese. In fact I don’t think I’m in any position to mock it at all, even if it looks like it’s going to be a bright, loud, 3D trainwreck on the popcorn line.

(shorter me: I’ll see your Orlando Bloom and raise you Chris O’Donnell).

I’m with Annalee. I think it has the potential to be fun. But nothing will shake my devotion to the ’93 version.

i’m with annalee and nancy – the 1993 film was good stuff. but there is also a time and place for ridiculousness on a Pirates Of The Caribbean 2 scale. what other fictional or historical figures can be improved by action ridiculousness? all of them. pretty much all of Thomas Hardy’s works definitely.

On re-watch, it occurs to me that Orlando Bloom might look so funny here because he’s the only one who realizes that this is a comedy.

Personally, I can’t pass up the opportunity to see women kicking it Matrix-style in 17th Century gowns. Of which I realize we probably saw everything there is to see in the trailer, but.

For me Gene Kelly played the definitive D’Artagnan (with some of the best fencing and bumpkin scenes in movie history), Lana Turner was the one and only Lady de Winter (alluring – check, icebitch – check, utterly creepy – check), and no actor will ever be a better Richelieu than Vincent Price (that’s what Count Dooku should have been like: charming yet evil). Okay, I could have done without Angela Lansbury as Anne of Austria, but there’s always something.

Compared to my beloved classic however this trailer screams Raspberry Award for Best Would-be Ed Wood Uwe Boll Crossover. The Three Musketeers fighting Ninjas? Why not just bring Godzilla into the mix and relocate the whole story to Omicron Persei 8?
